Sounds like you'd be happier in one of the glorious centrally planned urban cities of China.

I don't think that it's "I don't like the way some people live.." as much as that some people want everyone to pay the true costs of gasoline. There are a lot of negative externalities that come from the extraction and use of gasoline (pollution chief among them) and these companies receive massive subsidies (to the tune of billions per year).
Suburban developments also wouldn't exist in their current format and to their current extent without the massive federal and state investment in road infrastructure. How much does the federal government pay for roads compared to alternate transportation methods? How much does the state pay for roads compared to alternate transportation methods?
Not to mention single family home ownership (typical in car dependent, suburban areas) is made possible for many through federal subsidies, whereas alternate forms of living (renting, condos) are not nearly subsidized to the same extent.
So your "Sounds like you'd be happier in one of the glorious centrally planned urban cities of China." comes off as rather naive, as the typical suburban, car dependent layout of many of our cities today did not simply happen organically, but through government actions.
