The prices show that it is wildly desireable, just not possible to everyone as they cannot afford it.

I don't think that it's "I don't like the way some people live.." as much as that some people want everyone to pay the true costs of gasoline. There are a lot of negative externalities that come from the extraction and use of gasoline (pollution chief among them) and these companies receive massive subsidies (to the tune of billions per year).

Suburban developments also wouldn't exist in their current format and to their current extent without the massive federal and state investment in road infrastructure. How much does the federal government pay for roads compared to alternate transportation methods? How much does the state pay for roads compared to alternate transportation methods?

Not to mention single family home ownership (typical in car dependent, suburban areas) is made possible for many through federal subsidies, whereas alternate forms of living (renting, condos) are not nearly subsidized to the same extent.

So your "Sounds like you'd be happier in one of the glorious centrally planned urban cities of China." comes off as rather naive, as the typical suburban, car dependent layout of many of our cities today did not simply happen organically, but through government actions.

"Construction on a 222-unit apartment complex called "Alexan On Krog Street" could begin by late this year. The garden-style apartments will rise just south of the existing Stove Works complex and should take less than 18 months to complete. One selling point, officials hope, will be the project's hundreds of feet of Beltline frontage."
Sheesh, yet another apartment complex? This area is getting darned near full.

Will this go on top of the Stoveworks surface lot or in the plot below it?

I was driving 75 south today and I noticed a few crains at Northside Pkwy exit so I did a little research and here what I found. Nothing special around 8 floors but I like the design and it's going to fit perfectly to existing buildings.
I wish to see more buildings like that around Atlanta.

I hope they accept this because if this happen this will be a major development : they compared it to the western building in downtown. So I cant wait to see where it turns out and this could be a new development for vine city because the dome is the edge of it!!!

Atlanta Streetcar Video #2

I asked a senior official at Central Atlanta Progress why the Downtown Loop was the inaugural line for the Atlanta Streetcar, as opposed to say the proposed line along Peachtree St. (from Brookhaven MARTA to 5 Points). This CAP official said the failure of T-SPLOST combined with (as you said) lack of completed studies on the Peachtree St line effectively forced them to focus their efforts on the Downtown Loop as the 1st line, since funding would be easier to secure and studies were closer to completion. This official also mentioned how at several public meetings residence of Midtown were unified in stating their concerns regarding the car Maintenance Facilities noise, pollution and its overall effect of the neighborhood's quality of life, not to mention it would be an unwelcome eyesore. Overwhelmingly Midtowners supported the Atlanta Streetcar as a great local transportation option and an effective form of traffic relief, saying they would definitely use it. Yet a resounding NO was heard to housing the Maintenance Facility in Midtown. This official also pointed out that the GDOT already owned the land and the City of Atlanta has been trying to improve the area underneath the connector for years.

I'm pretty sure the cranes you saw were associated with Vallate Apartments currently under construction: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ChYj-owVGF0
I don't think The Gavitello has broken ground, or ever will.

I really don't know if that's the case, though.

I could NEVER afford my neighborhood now as a first time buyer, even after the meltdown of a few years ago. I moved here from Midtown when it was time to buy and stop renting (NW DeKalb). I have never regretted it and love it here, but I honestly don't know how I could swing it today if I was just starting out.

As far as owning in the areas of the City that I would even consider, I really can't imagine it ever happening without winning the lottery.

I think most folks live in the burbs because of the affordability. Every single friend I have out there wishes they lived closer in, and I'm talking about more than a few people.

I hate when people make statements that are so unnecessary and untrue. People that usually make these statements are people that live in the lower income sections of that district.
There are expensive places in Midtown, as well as very affordable areas. This is true for all areas of the city and suburbs. Lets be realistic, most people who make a combined income of $200k with three kids, are not going to choose a high rise downtown. It doesn't mean they can't afford one. I've a friend that just had a baby, she and her husband or both lawyers, she specifically wants to either be in Sandy Springs, or East Cobb. Yes, they love city life as much as anyone, they moved here two years ago from Manhattan. But for them its about the overall family life for their child and possibly future kids. To make statements as if people can't afford the city is a joke. There are plenty of retail kids, telemarketers, and hotel staff, that live in the city.

Sweet Auburn Curb Market namwd one of the world's best food markets.

Downtown Atlanta’s Sweet Auburn Curb Market is listed as one if the best food markets of the world in this USA Today piece. Here’s a quote:

The market first started in 1918 and was housed in a giant tent, bringing fresh produce from farmers to the people of Atlanta. Vendors at the market are independently owned businesses, and sell products like meat, fish, baked goods, vegetables, fruits, nuts, and plants. There are many restaurants inside the market, several of which serve ethnic foods, like Afrodish Restaurant, which serves Caribbean prepared foods.

another midtown project

Not to start any unsubstantiated rumors, but there is another big residential project in the works for a parking lot on Peachtree St. in Midtown. Cant give away any specifics, but I think you guys are gonna like it! Based on the schedule Ive seen, I'd expect an announcement sometime by the end of the year...

I love unsubstantiated construction rumors!

In fact, I wouldn't be surprised to see several pretty significant new projects announced around the city.
