If I remember right (which is probably way off...) there was a lot more planned for the TOD type stuff. But because of the timing of the rail being done (right in the middle of this recession) like everything in the US right now financing fell through.

It's nothing more than the current excuse, which follows the South Florida formula - excuse after excuse as TOD after TOD fails to materialize (they're pushing 20 years of unsatisfied promises on Tri-Rail by now).

Plenty of apartments have gone up in West Campus in the same timeframe. A few VMU developments on other corridors without rail have also gone up just fine. The economy has very little to do with the problems of the supposed TODs on this POS.

^Well, the economy certainly does affect development since right now the big issue is a lack of lending from banks. But yeah, even without the financing, they should still be announcing projects. That's part of the process to getting funding is making an announcement that you're planning something. But the fact that nothing in those areas is being announced pretty much means nothing is planned at all.

Star Riverside

I noticed that there was a cement truck in the Star Riverside site today. I wonder if they were pouring for a crane base?

Found this picture online. It's not mine; I merely found it.

My g/f saw it on Facebook and I asked her to send me a URL. Sorry, I don't know where it was located.

Don't worry... there'll be another one on November 14, 2016.

By the way (off topic... sorry), I recently read 2001. The book is much better than I remember the movie being.

I shudder to think what it would be like. It was soooo crowded this year, noticeably more so than last year. And that's with our current lack of downtown hotel space, difficulty getting into downtown, etc. I think SXSW is almost to the point where it's become a victim of it's own success. They're talking about reducing the number of free events next year, which is probably a good idea, even though I personally love the free shows (eg, Auditorium shores).

Not to mention the near riot at Death from Above 1979, the incident where the camera boom fell on top of people, and the altercation where Ben Weasel punched a female.. crazy stuff

I would seriously hate not having the free shows at Auditorium Shores. Free concerts at that park have been a fixture of the Austin music scene for the last 4 decades. I didn't make it to any of those free shows this year, though. I don't know, none of the bands really stood out to me all that much.

15,000 people showed up for the free show on St. Patrick's Day. They even knocked down the fences to get in after the people at the gate turned them away because it was too crowded. It looked really busy. I've been there with 11,000 people at a concert, and it was packed then.

Yeah, I hear you. I guess I only look at the good side of it. Downtown just seems more diverse at this time of year. I agree though that Downtown is too crowded. Probably because most of the free shows are concentrated in one small area of the Downtown? I don't know... but perhaps the Greenwater Development and Seaholm will add more space for these crowds? Or maybe that's just gonna create more mess.

I think once they get the Waller Creek Tunnel finished and redevelop Waterloo Park, and also attract more restaurants, bars and clubs along Waller Creek, that that area could bare some of the brunt of the activity. Not to mention there's a ton of state parking garages adjacent to the park. It would make a really venue for some of the outdoor festivities. I'm still in favor of having the big free concerts at Auditorium Shores, though. It is such a great park for showing off downtown. That fireworks display they had against the skyline with the concert going was pretty cool.

Btw, a friend of mine who works at a restaurant in the 2nd st. district talked about some locals trying to get SXSW to move to San Antonio. Anybody else hear about that? That kinda surprised me a bit.

There have been similar festivals in other cities, but none of them had the weight that SXSW does. I'm not sure it would work anywhere else.

By the way, the music world lost a giant yesterday in Austin...
