Good pics! How are the subway cars there? I'm not too familiar with SanFrans transit. I've used it a few times but I need to check out the subways. I absolutely despise the Red Line here in LA, but it's mostly because of the people that use it(too many hostile homeless people acting dumb) and the train cars suck. They are updating the cars however.

We have 2 different systems, BART and Muni Metro, of course. On the central spine of Market Street, where they are both underground, the 2 systems operate above and below each other, BART deeper than Muni.

BART's cars are very old--from the 1970s--and being completely replaced within the next couple of years: https://www.bart.gov/about/projects/cars .

Muni Metro's rolling stock are modern streetcars that operate in 3 modes: As streetcars, in dedicated rights of way on the surface and underground. They can be linked together into multicar trains but usually not more than 2 at a time. Demolition is happening now at 1699 Market St, the corner of Market St. and Valencia. There will be a 9 story residence built on the site. There is a burst of activity west of Van Ness Avenue this year. The photo is mine. The architectural drawing is from Predidio Development Partners, LLC at http://presidiodp.com/Residential-89.html

It is quite curious that the drawing of the Fox Plaza condo proposal is still at the site. That condo project was to be built in 2005 but died on the vine.

According to the SF Chronicle, the Salesforce Tower will be fully enclosed by the end of July and will be fully completed by Jan 2018.

Feds approve grant for Caltrain electrification project

Sen. Dianne Feinstein announced in a tweet Monday that Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao told her she would sign off on the grant.

For those who don't know, it will replace a diesel dependent train system that goes from San Jose to San Francisco to electricity, which will increase speeds and will have a positive impact on the environment in the area.

Currently, Caltrain from San Jose to San Francisco takes 59 minutes, but with electrifying the train, it will take 50 minutes.

Most importantly to San Franciscans, any train that transits a tunnel from 4th & Townsend to the new TransBay Terminal MUST be electric. Diesel trains can't do it, I assume because their emissions are a no-go in the tunnel. So electrification is a key first step in bringing trains, whether commuter or HSR, into the Terminal.

It also moves more trains, twice as many people, allows for fewer track repairs, new High Speed Rail trains, and finally the ability to enter downtown San Francisco underground. It is an outstanding deal.
