Fireworks likely over stadium project

Organizers of Thursday night's "community workshop" about the University of Utah's proposed development west of Rice-Eccles Stadium could get an earful.

While the university has hailed the Universe Project development as "transformative," "a high-quality mixed-used project" and "an exciting and vibrant experience for patrons," critics are assailing the project and questioning its need. They are concerned about impacts on local businesses and rental landlords, worried about an outside developer's involvement and wondering about the process that brought the Universe Project this far...

Hotel-condo project aims to re-energize Sugar House

...The 188-room hotel will anchor some 300 condominiums and apartments set atop a mix of street-level shops, said Eric Nelson of the Red Mountain Retail Group.

Red Mountain's plan calls for renovating the Leisure Living building, the Granite Furniture warehouse and part of the Granite Furniture showroom, and constructing new buildings along McClelland Street and Sugarmont Avenue. The site's architect said the development would retain the character of the area through use of existing materials, including both the Granite Furniture and Snelgrove signs.

"This is key to reclaiming and reenergizing Sugar House," Nelson said...

For now, Sugar House's beloved blue Rotosphere is still mounted atop Granite Furniture--but this new development is scheduled to take its place. The shape of the Rotosphere's new pedestal imitates Granite's vintage vertical sign.

Salt Lake City seeks funds to finish Jordan River trail

...Working to complete most of the Jordan River Parkway Trail this year, city officials have applied for a grant to finish a $1 million trail project that runs from 1800 North to the Davis County border.

The project would include installing a 10-foot bicycle and pedestrian path and a 5-foot equestrian path, repairing bridges and constructing an elevated trail system over the river's wetlands...

Regarding the Stadium. I recall that Dave Checketts was pretty adamant that he wanted the Stadium in Downtown, he didn't want it anywhere else in SLC but he was VERY interested in having it downtown.

He's no idiot, he realized the potential boon it could have to the franchise and to the naming sponsor by placing in the CBD. When SLC by way of stubborn landlords and the Legislature didn't allow that to happen, he decided to pursue the next most suitable location, which in his mind and mind of the legislators was Sandy. He realized the importance of having it near transit and rather than place it at the fairpark and wait for transit, he was able to place it in Sandy which already had two reasonably distanced trax stops near by.

Jan 29, 2008 – With the addition of Reid Ewing to its faculty, the University of Utah's College of Architecture + Planning is taking aim at the top 20 city and metropolitan planning programs in the United States.

Dr. Ewing's expertise in transportation and environmental issues adds an important dimension to the city and metropolitan planning program at the U, as the Wasatch Front is expected to double in size by 2050, according to Chris Nelson, an expert in metropolitan growth who also joined the Utah faculty last summer.

"By virtue of our faculty, our program has the potential to become a national leader in sustainable development," Ewing notes. "I see particular opportunities in planning for climate change and energy security." Ewing is co-author of Growing Cooler: The Evidence on Urban Development and Climate Change, written in collaboration with Keith Bartholomew, assistant professor at the U who researches the effects of transportation on the environment.

Most recently a research professor at the National Center for Smart Growth, Ewing hopes to establish a center for transportation research while at the university. "Being able to study transportation development in the West will be a critical component of the work that I do," says Ewing. "Being in Salt Lake City offers a first-hand opportunity to see the growth happen and to play a role in helping others plan."

I thought I read, in that PDF someone posted, that this was going to be partially covered by the Stimulus plan?

So I was doing some research for work regarding long range population projections and I came across projections published by the Governors office in 2008 and was SHOCKED at what the estimated would be the largest city in Utah in 2060.

Sorry to disappoint everyone but SLC is only projected to be the 2nd most populous city at 225,956, Eagle Mtn is 3rd at 180,000

sorry Urban Boy.

The most populous city is projected to have a population of 431,239.

I will let people make some guesses before I reveal the city.

Wow if thats the case, St George's sprawl would totally destroy its beautiful surroundings! I really hope that report turns out wrong. St George is not meant to be a huge city.

To cheer myself up a bit, I bet those projections were based on if it's massive amount of growth were to continue at the same pace for the next 60 years. Its already declining though, no?

It's rather pointless to try and predict the largest city in 51 years. Trends change, cities that were exploding in growth start slowing down and another city quickly becomes the fastest growing in the area. 51 years is just too long and I'd be willing to bet by that time, St. George's growth has slowed substantially.
