You said it! This is exactly what we need.

I'm anxious to see the details.

Some of you were asking for any pictures I had from the DRC meeting re: the Northside medical office building. I was hesitant to post this one since it's emarrassingly bad, but here you go: Northside MOB

at least the deck is actually integrated with the building, so you don't have any lost square footage on the ground level. i was expecting a lot worse.

if they masque the deck with some plantings, and then put retail on the spring and west peachtree sides (will it even front 13th?), it might not be that terrible. heck, they could even put some flashing LED billboards on the parking deck section.

Well, see that's the thing. I wasn't able to get a picture of it, but this development includes more 10-story deck on the east side of the block (the building sits on the north-west corner). The deck on that side, fronting West Peachtree is unfortunately completely uncovered. Until the empty block along 14th is developed it will be extremely visible from pretty much any direction.

If the City grants increased parking, I can only hope somebody files a lawsuit to challenge it. If MARTA had any backbone, they'd do it.

(EDIT: Midtown has a parking cap, so any parking about the cap would be a variation subject to hardship)

Water sculpture to grace National Center for Civil and Human Rights

A strikingly bold glass sculpture with flowing water will adorn Atlanta’s newest attraction, the National Center for Civil and Human Rights.

The two sweeping glass panels — rising 30 feet high — will contrast the design of the Center’s two walls, which will tower 72 feet high, and rise from a plaza at the corner of Ivan Allen Boulevard and Centennial Olympic Park Drive downtown. The water sculpture will become the connecting focal point of the plaza sitting between the Center and downtown. Quotes from the civil and human rights movement will be etched into the two glass panels, and people will be able to be inspired by those words as they walk between the two.

The water feature will open at the same time as the Center — on Memorial Day 2014. The Center is celebrating its “topping off” — when the building reaches its highest point — at a ceremony on Sept. 20. Leaders say construction is still on schedule despite this year’s record rains. Construction on the water feature will begin in early 2014.

I think that water feature at the Civil Rights Museum looks nice.

Construction Update #6.3

National Center for Civil & Human Rights: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KQJMAgljWJk
The Center has topped out at 3 floors. Take a look and judge for yourself but IMO this building is really too small. Compared to the World of Coke (94,000 sqft) and the GA Aquarium (600,000+ sq ft) right next door, the Center is by far the smallest (42,000 sq ft). Truly sad because the work of Atlanta's Civil Rights pioneers is by far the greatest gift any Atlantan has given the world. Sorry John Pemberton but Martin Luther King wins in my book. Too bad Asa Candler isn't around to market the Center. I digress...

College Football Hall Of Fame: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9V-ZYi-Y1UY
Construction has ramped up with the addition of a 2nd crane. Crews are up to the 3rd floor. I bet this place will be very popular once complete with lots of pedestrians in the area.

Aloft Hotel: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C9Go0XpzYjw
Hotel ATL is no more. You can see how crews have completely gutted the lobby. The entire lot is fenced off and the landscaping has been removed. Scaffolding is in place as crews replace windows and repaint the entire facade. Looks like a full renovation.

GSU College of Law Building: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-V62YC5Z8jU
The entire lot ha been fenced off and say goodbye to 75% of the trees on John Wesley Dobbs Ave. X marked for death. I suppose the parking deck containing the Dry Cleaners and Subway will soon be cleared. Does anyone have any info regarding the deck's demo?

Hyatt House: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RXun7rS2tEk
Diagonally across the street from the GA Aquarium is the site of a proposed 150-room Hyatt House.

One12Courtland: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k4VDkCpz-FM
Crews are working on the 6th floor of the student housing tower. The former Ramada Inn looks great and is open to students.

Elan Westside: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9aglW_Bs_5o
The main building has topped out at 6-floors. Crews continue work on of the units above the parking deck.

Walton Westside: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gffH32to_NY
Crews have topped out the building fronting Huff St at 6-floors. Work continues on the 2nd building across from the Goat Farm Arts Center. This are is going to be a traffic nightmare when another 250 cars move into the neighborhood!

Tech Engineered Biosystems Building: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lJIIL6dwmhs
A lot of concrete is being used on the foundations of this building. Crews have finally made it to street level.

Atlanta Buddhist Culture Center: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p05BoJuRV5o
The 13,700 sqft Buddhist Center is taking shape quickly. The steel framework is almost complete. The building looks to only be 2-floors.

Station 16 Apartments: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BkUqDhJpMEg
Thanks to the map.atlantadev.com for help with identification! This 3-acre lot is bound by 16th, 17th and Mecaslin streets. Its not in Atlantic Station, just across the street.

The National Center for Civil & Human Rights does look small, but give it a chance its not complete yet, I think it is going to be much bigger feeling when complete, and the addition of the 2 water walls will be cool. Thank for all of your updates. It is 42,000 square feet.

The National Center for Civil and Human Rights will be a 42,000 square foot facility in the heart of Downtown Atlanta. It will be a world class cultural institution dedicated to exploring stories of civil and human rights in dynamic indoor and outdoor spaces.

Speaking of museums. Is the National Health Museum dead, dying or just having arterial stenosis?

I was under the impression that the current building under construction was just phase 1 of this, based on future funding allowing already designed expansions down the road.

Does anyone know if this is still the case?

This is accurate. I believe the renderings for phase 2 are out there somewhere.

Now I remember this rendering. Still much prefer the other, more angular design they had but glad to see this coming along. The water feature sounds nice.

New Project Proposed for Memorial

http://atlanta.curbed.com/archives/2013/09/26/10m-mixeduse-project-on-tap-for-grant-park.php

Quote:
$10M Mixed-Use Project On Tap For Grant Park?

[Rendering via Archetype Design]

A $10-million mixed-use development may be coming to Grant Park. Curbed Atlanta has learned that developers are hoping to bring a five-story project — comprised of apartments, retail, a restaurant and office space — to the lot at 301 Memorial Drive, located between Harden and Hill streets. Documents we found say the project would include 94 apartments (smallish studios, ones and twos), as well as 3,500 square feet of retail and 2,500 square feet for a restaurant. Room would be left for a small amount of office space. Simon Tuohy of Urban Realty Partners tells Curbed that the site is currently under contract and that closing is anticipated by the end of next month. If all goes as planned (which happens, you know, never), construction could be ALL DONE by July '14.

The 301 Memorial project would be an addition to the (hopefully continued) growth of Grant Park's west end. In one of the former locations of iconic live-music dive bar Lenny's, it's only about two-tenths of a mile down from the neighborhood's chief restaurant locale (Tin Lizzy's, Six Feet Under, Republic Social House, etc.) and the next block over from this mystery lot we told you about last week. If the latter development — originally pitched as some type of grocery-restaurant-maybe residential project — comes to fruition as well, things could really get going in Grant Park.

— By Curbed Atlanta contributor Tyler Estep
The design is more of the same, but this will be good to inject some much-needed life along this stretch of Memorial.
