Shoddy deal. When I was with IGA the contract the union got us stipulated automatic pay raises every 500 hours worked til you maxed out at like $17. Its probably higher now, I quit about 5 years ago. Got health benefits too but I lost those at one point in a contract re-negotiation cause I was part time and wasn't available to work enough hours.

I don't think UFCW is worth keeping around. They don't seem to accomplish anything good for the bulk of their employees. People working at Walmart without unionization are doing just as well as those at Superstore and Safeway. A few employees aren't doing bad but if you're just starting, it's not something you can live off of. That said, my dad has worked at Walmart for over a decade and makes less than I do per hour (and less than half of what I do overall since I actually get to work full time), even though I've had my current non-unionized job at a local business for only 18 months.

They're mainly entry level jobs though. They are quick to promote people who have it in them to succeed in that environment but for the most part, it's just kids and adults who are down on their luck going through a revolving door of shit jobs.

i used to work at superstore and it was union we were told we would get benefits but you needed to be full time and they never hired full time - i never had a shift longer than 4 hours even though i might have had to work 5 days a week, the most hours in one week i ever got was 24 - as far as i know they still do that there, they only hire part time in order to skirt the benefits issue - and the wage isn't much better than minimum wage and you end up having to pay union dues so you really are losing out

same with another job i had earlier this year - it was union and you were guaranteed raises after x amount of hours and benefits etc but never got enough hours to qualify, granted i only stayed a month, but they paid slightly better than minimum here when i started and while working there minimum wage went up and it was the same wage we were getting and they never made any provisions in the contract to stipulate if minimum wage goes up that the pay rate would go up accordingly so everyone working was ending up making less than minimum since a portion was going to union dues...

sorry for derailing...

I work at Superstore, and the last CBA was quite a sham. At the time, the bait and switch offers in the contract attracted the younger people (myself included) who took part of it said yes to the contract offer, while the older employees who worked for the company for more than 10, 15, or 20 years said no to it. There is no unity with the old and young in terms of what the pay is, and who gets the full benefits. Everyone gets benefits, but not everybody will get full coverage, and the majority of the employees are part-timers.

The CBA for Superstore/Extra Foods expires next year, and I don't know what will happen in less than a year from now. I personally don't know if I'm going to stay with the company any longer because of ongoing management shuffles that's been happening for 2 years.

Wow Winnipeg truly is evolving when it comes to retail! Last time I was in Polo Park I was surprised to see the new Apple Store, Hollister and Forever 21 come to the city! And now you guys have the new Ikea! So excited for my next visit to Winni!

This could be a stupid question.. But as Winnipeg is obviously growing, what are the chances of getting some luxury brands into the city, such as Louis Vuitton or Coach etc.?
And where?? I can dream right??

Coach, Michael Kors, Kiehls, Victoria Secret are all at Polo Park now. Not all luxury brands maybe but newer than the Apple Store.

You could probably add a half dozen more to that list...

- Banana Republic
- Hugo Boss
- Aeropostale
- Costa Blanca
- Ivivva
- Little Burgundy

Woah! Okay, so I'm a little behind.. Winnipeg is DEFINITELY doing awesome in the retail department. The luxury brands are more than I expected in the city! Any sign of a Louis Vuitton coming to the city? I love that brand!

Any news about a Kildonan Place expansion? There was talk years ago about an expansion.

CBC news had a story about the retail outlook in 2013, and Kildonan Place expansion was mentioned

Shindico is developing "Shops of Kildonan Mile" north of the mall, and they did say the Cineplex Threatre is expanding

You know I was wondering about that driving by there the other day. Would it be possible to build up? Or just out, if anyone knows. A lot of mechanical on the roof would need to be moved to go up. But it looks like the skylights were build to an excessive height, which leads me to speculate on the building up part.

Also, some folks on here will say that the Kildonan Mile thing is dead due to the jewish cemetery on the site. But the plans look to build around said cemetery. Food for thought.

The last expansion plan I saw in the newspapers for Kildonan Place was a standalone building on the n/e corner by Sears across from the tax center. Sort of what like St. Vital Center did the Old Navy etc.

As for Shindico they need a major tenant to go into Kildonan Mile to make a go of it. The only one I can think of is a Lowe's as it was suppose to be the home of Superstore and Home Depot.

They went in on the other side of Regent after opposition from the residents of Amley Ave having a shopping center in their back yards.

I really don't think it matters if a strip mall goes in there. That whole area will be houses in 10 years anyways. The residents of Almey and Ravelston will have many a neighbour to deal with. Kind of a similar situation to Charleswood, except the area already has a major retail node.

I know a Perfanick, and when the area around their house was developed (just to the north of the Almey/Ravelston area), guess what they said. "Time to move", and that they did. Outside the perimeter.

That one has been tossed around for years. When I was in university and worked at the Canadian Tire right there in the early 2000s there was a plan for a retail development on the north side of Reenders, east of the Chamois/storage place and north of Canadian Tire to Peguis Street. IIRC Shindico was involved with that one, I'm guessing they couldn't find an anchor or really anyone to lease space. There was a ton of cheap retail space on Regent Ave, still is quite a bit.

That was probably the Home Depot/Superstore/Wal-Mart proposal that I was talking about above that moved across the street . Shindico has been sitting on that land for years trying to find a prime tenant for it.

Back then they were worried about the noise of nighttime deliveries (apparently big box stores don't like semi's dropping off containers during retail hours), garbage (attracts rats?), and the glare from the parking lot at night. I can't recall if they were also afraid that they might have to give up their wells and septic tanks and have to pay for sewer and water upgrades. I think they have that now after Costco went in.
