So let me sort this out, people who moved downtown are complaining about the homeless problem. How is this any different than the people who moved next to LAX or SMO and complained about the airplane noise? Or people that moved to Hollywood and are complaining about traffic or the lack of parking?

It's very different.

Homelessness can & should be..........changed.

LAX will always be there. Will always be loud. Will never have rapid transit to it. Will always suck, etc.

Traffic isn't a problem that can ever be fixed, even if we had plentiful real (see: Trains) public transit in the world, traffic in LA would still continue to get worse, day by day, year by year.

That's a terribly defeatist attitude. No one here thinks that homelessness will be outright eliminated, but many of us are hopeful that it can be improved. The homeless situation in DTLA can be managed much better.

Truly now one of the best Natural History Museums in the country. Even more impressive when it's coupled with the California Science Center next door.

Check out the amazing Otis Booth Pavilion with the 63-foot long fin whale along with the Nature Gardens and Nature Lab. Such a wonderful addition to our city!!

Homeless near Angel's Flight

I just spoke with the councilman's office and this is what I found out.

The park area near Angel's Flight is currently no-man's land. It was owned by the CRA which was dissolved by the Governor. The City is trying to buy it...which will probably happen. They would turn it into a park which would prevent camping.

The city is close the 1250 units to be built by the city to house homeless. When that takes place the city can petition to get the injunction overturned which currently allows the homeless to sleep on sidewalks.

BTW, the city shelters are not full every night.

The LAPD does not have the manpower to monitor the "sleeping time" on the sidewalks...which is 9 pm to 6 am. Those are the hours allowed to camp overnight. Call the BID security if you see a violation (that is me talking).

Evidently the Group Stakeholders have been meeting on this (Angel's Flight, Loft buildings, Grand Central Market etc.). They are very concerned about the situation. I have seen the homeless set up camps earlier than 9:00 pm.

So...if you are concerned they have nowhere to go at night, think again. There are some options out there but as a city we need to do more to help those in need. In my opinion, if there are beds available we should force them into the shelters or into recovery programs.

Thanks for the update. It's good to know that they are working on it.

There's so much that can be done with that land. The city could put another simple pocket park, a massive Beijing/Zurich-style bike share, a fountain, educational info about DTLA, a restored yellow car, . . . honestly anything that isn't a homeless colony.

A restored LARY car is genius! They could take the 1 thats sitting right here in DTLA doing nothing. Turn it into a tourist attraction.. That would be an amazing addition honestly.

They shoulda incorporated one into Grand Park, Spring St, cornfield, etc. Always wondered why they didn't. Tourists and locals alike would probably dig it.

Wondered why they didn't? This is LA. Nothing here makes sense.

Imagine that LARY car, towed to the middle of Spring St Park, and turned into a coffee shop.. Makes too much sense to ever be a reality. I believe the park opens on Monday if anyone is interested.

A coffee shop, incorporated into a playground, converted into the world's coolest park bench, etc. So many possibilities.

..and then somebody would say "another coffee shop on Spring Street?!?" or "so we have ANOTHER coffee shop in downtown and again, very little park space".

Personally, we have enough coffee shops, what we need is park space where neighbors can just hang out, read a book, meet neighbors, throw a frisbee, etc...

Damned if you do, damned if you don't. LA will never win, as people will always find a way to complain about everything.

More on the store HunterK spoke about earlier at 7th and Spring. Love to see these independent stores..that is exactly what Downtown needs.

Definitely the coolest store in (real) downtown. Hammer & Spear is amazing - but outside the core unfortunately.

Their prices are so great.. There were a lot of people in there both today & yesterday. We need more businesses like this! 2 doors down (along 7th) in the same building a cool jewelry store is being built out right now. Not the junk you see in the jewelry district, but something that will flow well with Kinetescape.

Downtown Los Angeles Update of 6-12-13

Hello everyone! I have returned from my long venture through Downtown. I managed to get as much as possible in the small frame of time I had, so sit back and enjoy the update! One thing I noticed was a surprising increase in amount of cabs. Any particular reason why? Possibly E3? There were a ton of reps from E3 at the JW, so maybe that was the cause, but I loved the vibe of seeing a cab everywhere. Anyways, enjoy the update guys! I actually got a chance to go to Little Tokyo too

Ava Little Tokyo

Interesting little project. Here's my first on the project.

Jia Apartments

I couldn't get a better shot aside from the car shots, sorry guys

Broad and Parcel Tower

I was shocked at how fast the Parcel Tower is growing. The Museum actually has some noticeable changes for once.

Wilshire Grand

I guess you can say this was my best update on the Wilshire Grand. Probably due to the fact that I was able to get a few shots from inside the Wedbush tower. Had no idea it had more than 20 floors, haha.

Courtyard Marriott

The typical Courtyard update. Nothing special.

9th and Olive

Interesting progress. Nothing to note.

8th and Hope

Already on the 3rd floor! Can't wait until it towers over the Macy's parking garage XD

8th and Grand

So they're putting dirt back into the hole?

Well, this brings the update to an end. I hope you enjoyed the hard work I put into going around Downtown. If there is something you wish to see next time, feel free to ask.

Great photos. Is the Jia in Chinatown or Little Tokyo? I like the bldg.
