Water bills?

In thinking about it, that site has three advantages, listed in order of importance:

1. Size (11k sf is pretty big for a N.O. lot)
2. Location on a major street (Fillmore)
3. Corner lot (so can drain side street)

Dunno if the actual criteria are like that. Will be interesting to see where else they put them.

The 3.3 billion dollar water management replacement/project is funded in part by our water bills.

Saw that the Orpheum is applying for an alcohol permit and I have good information that they are in serious talks to bring the Louisiana Philharmonic back , so let's hope this attempt is more successful than the previous ones!

If I figure correctly, that works out to $165,000 per 450 square foot apartment. $140 per square foot to renovate this building, and then basically turn it over to homeless and low-income citizens. It's no wonder the neighbors are up-in-arms.

My Lakeview neighborhood fought something similar (and lost) in the 1980s. Our neighborhood of single family, owner occupied houses had nothing but trouble with the project. It finally ended when the doctor running the building closed it after it started to lose money when the grants ran out.

We missed this last week I guess - moderately solid progress on BR-NOLA commuter rail. Seems reasonable and may happen as long as work continues.

Agree not in favor of projects like this at all... I sure hope they put in lots of provisos for the operation of the facility. The devil is or isnt in the details.

As for the Orpheum, its my understanding the LPO should be there for its 2015-2016 season.

Interesting. Are you involved with this?

Bayou changes still up in the air

A crowd gathers to hear live music during Bayou Boogaloo (photo courtesy of Bayou Boogaloo Music Festival).
More than two months after an organization called Greener Bayou St. John Coalition met to discuss the possibility of regulating events and active recreation on the bayou, decisions about the future of the waterway’s use remain up in the air.

City Councilwoman Susan Guidry told the Mid-City Neighborhood Organization last week that she favors keeping the bayou open to anyone, only charging fees for events that would make some exclusive use of it. Members of the Greener Bayou St. John Coalition, however, continue to advocate for stronger management of events to protect the neighborhoods surrounding the waterway.

As the bayou’s ecological resurgence has resulted in a recreational renaissance, festivals like Bayou Boogaloo and the annual July Fourth Boat Parade have increased in popularity, drawing thousands of attendants to the bayou each year.

The bayou’s recreational use has also increased, as volleyball players, boaters, runners and cyclists have all flocked to the waterway’s green banks and waters.

In the past several months, however, debate has sparked as neighborhood organizations, residents and City Council members all try to sort out problems that come with the bayou’s increased use. Issues range from boats being indefinitely docked on the bayou’s banks to the fairness of the bayou’s exclusive use for festivals.

In the most recent update, Councilwoman Susan Guidry said Monday that festivals should be charged for using Bayou St. John – but, given that not all festivals are equal, not every festival should be charged the same price.

“It’s exciting, and it’s wonderful and it’s vibrant and it’s what New Orleans is about,” Councilwoman Susan Guidry said at a Mid-City Neighborhood Organization meeting Monday, in a public statement supporting the bayou’s increased use...

Hey everyone,

First time poster here. Big fan of this thread and love to see all of the new projects going on in New Orleans. A while ago The New Orleans Advocate bought a building on St Charles to be their headquarters. Saw this article online providing more details on the project.

Cheers

^ Interesting. Seems like they really are restoring the original design pretty closely. Score one for Mid-Century!

Original Klein Motors design... I dig the sloped storefront glass on the right!

Speaking of mid-century restorations, does anyone have recent photos of the WWL renovation on Rampart? I was looking forward to that.

Good first post. Does anyone know what was there prior to the 50s dealership construction, though?

Edit: why the heck are they building a one story building in the 2400 block of Canal? A few floors of apts over retail would be much more appropriate and beneficial for the city.

Delgado Community College is set to move forward in the coming weeks on a project to replace the library at its main campus.
Matt Altier, assistant vice chancellor for facilities and planning, said the state Office of Facility Planning and Control is evaluating five bids for construction of the 60,000-square-foot Marvin E. Thames Learning Resources Center, a building that will replace Moss Memorial Library, which was damaged during Hurricane Katrina and demolished.
The apparent low bidder for the project was Lamar Contractors of Luling, which offered an $11.32 million

Agreed on the Canal one story... such a shame... only good thing is at least its replacing surface parking lot... not what I was wanting though!

Bike Share

The city is having some meetings about bike shares and Where Ya Rack has been asked to attend some of the preliminary meetings. Frankly, I'm not sure how much has been done or how serious it is, but the email said that NOLA "has the opportunity to have LA's first bike share program."

It's tomorrow. I'll let you know the interesting parts.

Its a great concept so I hope they make some progress with it here. ... we know South Market District will have one but thats not exactly the concept executed fully. Whats nice is to rent a bike and then go somewhere and then your done with it when you get there if you want to be!
