Maybe it's just me but I always thought the fact that it was to Oahu was a bit of a bust. The advantage of the direct flight is somewhat defeated if I have to then connect to a more interesting island. Would have rather had a Maui flight I think. If I'm flying to Hawaii from Texas I don't really want to waste days in Honolulu.

I'm not sure of the load factor...but, I thought it was good. The article makes it seem that Hawaiian is not charging what they could for the flight. Also, Hawaiian is beginning to refocus on flights to Asia - where they would need to deploy their A333's.

Just like the other growing pains Austin has experienced throughout its "life," this is just another one - and one in which then port is trying to rectify as quickly as they can.

The port is also still completely usable. If anything, we have been spoiled showing up to flights 45 minutes before wheels up and not having to worry about it.

When I lived in NYC it was sort of known that JFK sometimes was fine and other time you would risk your flight if you showed up late.

If I was an airline and I am selling 90% of the seats on every flight out of a city I would add more and just push the ground crew to move planes as fast as possible.

The thing that is odd to me is I was in SLC and Detroit recently and their second terminals are complete ghost towns. I mean they were never the fullest spots on earth but these are far emptier than I recall pre-pandemic. I assume a drop in TPAC and TATL flights are to blame.

It is just you. We took a flight out there last July (2021) and it was great. I even flew Southwest. I think Hawaiian would be a nice addition. The only drawback as a business commuter that might kill any direct flights out of here to Hawaii via Southwest where I collect all my points.

Southwest also has flights to Maui, Hilo and Kona, but I would assume you would connect in Honolulu.

Austin Airtanker Base to help with wildfire activity across the state

The Texas A&M Forest Service is opening the Austin Airtanker Base at the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport to help with increased wildfire activity across the state Saturday, July 15.

This year’s fire activity is above normal for the number of fire responses and acres burned. Since January 1, 2022, Texas A&M Forest Service has responded to 1,240 wildfires that burned 497,373 acres across the state.

“The airtanker’s speed is greater than that of a helicopter or single engine air tanker,” said George Martin, Texas A&M Forest Service Air Operations Branch Director. “These aircraft will be able to get anywhere in Texas in under one hour. Suppression aircraft can respond quickly, increasing the likelihood that a new ignition remains a small, manageable wildfire.”

Austin airport fight: South Terminal operator LoneStar sues city over eminent domain plan

LoneStar Airport Holdings, which operates the South Terminal at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, has filed a breach of contract lawsuit against the city, which is attempting to use eminent domain law to force LoneStar out so the city can expand the airport's main terminal.

LoneStar started operating the South Terminal in 2017 after signing a 40-year lease to run a business on the property and investing $12.5 million in renovating the facility. The terminal is separate from the main Barbara Jordan Terminal and houses operations for low-cost carriers Allegiant and Frontier airlines.

Austin filed a petition in June to condemn LoneStar’s lease and concessions agreement through the eminent domain process — a step the city says it must take before it can tear down the South Terminal as part of its wider airport expansion plan. Austin's airport is seeing record passenger volumes this year, and it has at times been unable to move travelers through in a timely fashion, with long waits in security lines and other problems arising as a result.

Probably load factor and cargo revenue challenges. Many experts have been saying for weeks that you're going to see this with many airlines on many routes (not just from AUS - but, across the board) this fall and winter. Expect more to come.
