Is it just me or does anybody else find it kinda funny that there's not a single station in the middle of 'Cambie Village'? Broadway and King Ed are 16 blocks apart....not exactly that close to any of the shops between 14th and 20th. I'd chalk a 8 block walk in either direction as prohibitively out-of-the way to access public transit on foot, especially as the line runs directly under the street. You'd think a station around 16th would be a higher priority than one at 33rd.

I would say less than 6 blocks walk (usually can be done less than 10 minutes) is ideal. For people who live or to shop around 14th and 20th, it may depend on situation but I would not say it is prohibitively out-of-the-way.

I always see people willing to walk 8 blocks or more (you can see the distance they walk by their shopping bags), for instance, between 33th-49th on Victoria, and between Cambie-Granville of the Broadway stretch.

Great comments, guys. I'm jealous over here in Shanghai. Sure we have 3 new lines with 50+ new stations opening by years end, but its just not the same.

I forgot to mention that the full train advertising wraps look surprisingly good.....and as for the interior, the seats aren't all that bad but they aren't vandal proof. You can see a ton of fingerprints on the bars, as they are reflective. And some stickers, like the ones for the yellow emergency bar, are missing/have been peeled off.

I also have to say i love not having ads inside the train, it looks so clean....only for a limited time.
Overall, the interior of the trains were clean and great when you see it in person. I guess the yellow paint on the bars just didn't look well in pictures...probably because they are reflective. The seats were comfortable too!

First official Canada Line service day numbers! Plus how to work the new ticket machines

It’s Canada Line’s first official service day!

So far, we’ve had 9,000 trips between 5 to 9:30 a.m., then up to 23,000 by 12:40 p.m. and 33,000 by 2:15 p.m. Our media relations guy Drew Snider says a lot of tourists and families were on board today. He also mentioned that we finished yesterday at just under 100,000 trips, according to ProTransBC public affairs manager Jason Chan!

Feel free to share your first ride experiences in this post, and check this other post for photos and video of opening day.

New Canada Line ticket machines: how to use debit or credit cards with them
Canada Line ticket vending machines: hold your credit or debit card in the slot!

Canada Line ticket vending machines: hold your credit or debit card in the slot!

We’ve been hearing that people are having trouble using their debit and credit cards with the new Canada Line ticket vending machines (TVMs), so here’s some info to help.

Canada Line TVMs are among the first in the region to accept debit and credit cards with a “chip” in them — a special computer chip for greater security which banking regulations will soon require all cards to carry.

What this means is that there’s a new “method” for using your credit or debit cards, even the ones that don’t have the chip.

On SkyTrain TVMs and other point-of-sale devices, you’re often required to insert the card into a slot and then remove it quickly. With the new system, you must insert the card, then hold until the amber light comes on beside the slot. You can also hear a “click”, as the card is accepted. Then the card has to be pulled out quickly!

Basically, the orange light indicates that the device knows a card has been inserted. The device then reads the card as it is being removed (swiped). However, if the card is left in for too long, the device “assumes” it’s an invalid card and rejects the transaction.

Eventually, these systems will replace the “old” systems throughout the financial world — including TransLink and its family of companies. Instructions on using the system are displayed on the TVMs, and a knowledgeable and helpful Canada Line Attendant is usually nearby to assist.

AFAIK this is up to Translink, they provide the transit data to Google.

It took awhile for the 595 Maple Ridge-Langley connector to get onto Google Maps. Oddly enough the Golden Ears Bridge still isn't on yet, the 595 bus has special water crossing capabilities.

Give it a month.

I wonder if that was from 'tourists' or real traffic. I guess we'll have to wait until after Sept.7 to find out the normal trips per day.

I rode the line from Waterfront to YVR and back last evening (Tuesday) after rush hour. I would say most of the people at that time were tourists/sightseers, like me.

When I rode the Canada Line yesterday, I boarded a total of 9 times with my exploring of different stations, so yesterday's boardings figure is probably inflated by me and other nerds like me

The stacked tunnel transition is near 16th, it wouldn't be possible. And a station around there would mean longer travel times than 25-mins.

I hope they do install the LED maps inside the trains in the near future too. I wonder if Translink (or InTransit) has any plans for that?

Yeah, I was wondering if the trains were going to carry ads in them. I suppose that'll come as soon as the ads in the stations are put up as well.

This was interesting, Stephen Ree's blog:

Quote:
As for platform lengthening, it’s not in the cards for the underground platforms, which are already 50 metres. Like you, I thought I had detected how this could be done, so I asked a senior source at InTransitBC, who confirmed to me last week that the underground stations are not designed to be extended. The elevated and at-grade stations have 40-metre platforms and those could be extended to 50 metres. Use of a centre car would involve selective door opening, with the doors at the extreme front and rear ends kept closed by the computer control system.
I don't think that's accurate at all, the stations from Broadway to Langara are definitely not 50-metre platforms.

Why would selective door opening be required if its a 15-metre middle C-car? All the doors would still be on the platform, but barely...which makes the case of trains having to stop at precise location on the platform.

He was assuming it was 20 metre C-Car. I corrected him soon after.

But the platforms underground ARE extendable to 50-metres right? This guy got his info from InTransitBC:

Of course they are. Just look at Bridgeport and you can see the extension room towards the North. Aberdeen Stn has room towards the south, Lansdowne towards the North, and Richmond-Brighouse towards the south. As for Templeton, it's towards the West I believe, Sea Island Centre towards the West, and YVR towards the West).

^ according to the above quote, the elevated stations are possible but the underground stations are not.
