In other news, I think the renaming to Burj Khalifa really brings out the non-Western element of this tower. If there was any doubt that UAE is an oil-rich monarchy, not a market Democracy, here you go. Perhaps in another era the U.S. would have named spectacular projects after presidents (like the Hoover Dam, JFK Airport) but not private sector projects, and would not name them after people who are still alive/in office.

Imagine if they had re-named 1WTC "the George Bush Tower," what an uproar there would be!

I say this with no condescension as it is just the ways of another culture, but I think that the re-naming puts a palpable damper on enthusiasm about this tower in the West.

Totally agree:

Freedom Tower >>> 1WTC
Sears Tower >>> Willys Tower
Burj Dubai >>> Burj Khalifa

they never know even by their own. so... They just spend, spend and spend there, do not worried about that, cause it is not to be payable back anyway.

^I wouldn't call it immigrant labor since they laborers won't be becoming citizens or evern residents. Imported labor would be a better description.

I was shocked to see this only cost 1.5 billion. About the same as the new Yankee Stadium. At these prices, they could build whatever they want.

IMHO they aren't going to change the district name... it will remain Burj Dubai Downtown, as well as the other references. Still, the metro station will change into "Burj Khalifah Station", though.

CTBUH put it as completed on their website, but I guess what's left to do there is open for interpretation.

Say "Burj Dubai beats the Sears Tower by almost twice in height." to any passerby, and there's at least a 50% chance they'll have a vague idea of what you're talking about, or that one of the names will ring a bell. Now try saying "Burj Khalifah beats Willis Tower by almost twice in height", and see how far that will get you.

Burj Whaaaaat? Ego a little inflated on that guy? Oh well, it will always be the Burj Dubai in my mind. As someone mentioned, that would be like naming the Freedom Tower, the Bush Tower, or the Obama Tower. That would be a disaster. We only name things after presidents are dead.

*In one of those shots... it looks like the whole building is exploding!... crazy!.. it looks a little over the top

How safe is the building. Have there been any deaths during construction? Any accidents?
