You guys talking about this thing?

Yeah, that looks lame. I've never noticed it before... I don't think I've ever entered HSC on that side so much as once. Is the bed tower supposed to go on that site?

Tis the shanty we speak of. Biff thinks the bed tower is going there. Bed tower as in a tower that contains generic hospital rooms?

I'm speculating on the location, I just know those shacks aren't long for this world and they are cramped for space. I have heard the bed tower would be sizeable - 15 to 20 stories.

That's tall by HSC standards. I'm guessing with the floor heights at play, even at 15 storeys it would probably still be taller than the 19 storey HSC CanadInns?

I'm assuming CancerCare will be 2 separate buildings unlike the original render that had a skywalk at the original 700 McDermot location? That'll be a bummer for CCMB staff in winter.
My understanding of the fuzzy HSC campus is both Kleysen Institue and CanadInns are part of HSC.

In terms of CancerCare, the Manitoba Clinic site shares a street corner with the existing CancerCare building. I would imagine that some for a skywalk will still be done. The original plan seemed to call for the addition to be built straight across McDermot instead of the diagonal of the Manitoba Clinic site.

Those two parkdades are actually HSC parkades. The U of M actually has the surface lot next to the Pharmacy building and the one at Tecumseh and Bannaytne which is the one the plans called for expanding with more levels.

^ Are they? I stand corrected, I thought they were U of M. Maybe U of M will have to pony up for a new parkade, then... or lease out space in the HSC ones. They're going to have too many people in the area to rely on surface parking, and the City is not readily persuaded to allow more demolition of houses around there to make way for surface parking.

I think we talked about parkades at HSC recently, and there was at least 7 of them IIRC. Most are rather large too. Do they really need more parkades?!

The original plan had them sharing space with some WHRA operations is a large 18 - 22 storey building.

I never quite understand when people argue that we need to build more parking in situations like this. There are alternative forms of transportation. The rates for parking is something that can be adjusted so easily to equate the demand with the supply. Like what is gonna happen if a new parkade isn't built? Will people opt to not attend the university cause they have to bus it?

Everybody wants to park right at the front door of wherever they're going. North American society I guess. Everyone's been raised on driving to their destination, outside of places like NYC.

There's a months-long wait for $80+/month employee parking passes at HSC

^ So both those 6-7 storey parkades near Tecumseh and Notre Dame are full, everyday?! Holy cripe, I should go into the parkade business at HSC!

The two you mentioned are both HSC parkades and run close to capacity most days. as I mentioned elsewhere, U of M has their own at Tecumseh and Bannaytne. I think that one is currently a 2-3 level structure and they are planning to add another 2-3 levels.

In terms of why parking is needed try recruiting profs for the faculty of medicine and suggesting they take a bus and see how well that works out...

HSC has thousands of people working in the area and not a lot of options other than parkades. The streets nearby are all 2 hr max areas to prevent people from just parking by the curb all day, and the parkades/surface lots are the only game in town if you want to drive.

U of M didn't have all that many people in the HSC area until recently, and that number is about to get a whole lot bigger. I don't see why U of M shouldn't meet the needs of staff, faculty and students by providing them with somewhere to park.

EDIT: Thanks for clarifying, Cory. I think we're kind of on the same page when it comes to parking... having a basic amount is a bit of a necessary evil. Although with the sheer amount of growth at HSC over the past few years with more coming, I wonder if there has been any thought given to expanding Transit service there? I recall when I used to take the 31 to work downtown, there were always a lot of people getting off at HSC... however, I'm guessing that unlike those lucky 31 riders, there are relatively few people who can get to HSC by bus without transferring once or twice.

What a ludicrous argument to build a parkade. There currently isn't enough parking for the handful or professors to park? An increase of parking costs in the area isn't going to drive a professor or Doctor into taking the bus. What utter nonsense.

Really? I'm a prof (albeit not in medicine) and all my young prof friends are quite transit-oriented, including one who is in medicine and bought a house in Wolseley so he could bus to work. Most of us did our PhDs in bigger cities where taking the bus is not a shameful thing. Profs from the boomer generation are another story.

On the way downtown this morning I noticed a bunch of construction equipment assembling at the Imperial Properties development site between Confusion Corner and Osborne Station... I can't say that I was really expecting this one to go ahead, but it looks like something's really happening now.

Doctors tend to be a profession that is always on call and needs to often get to a situation as quickly as possible. Expecting doctors to "take a bus" would be comparable to saying paramedics don't need dedicated stations or vehicles cause they could "take a bus".

Gas Station Theatre project got a small shot in the arm with some conditional funding from the Province.
