Posted Monday, January 20th, 2014 by NoDef Staff
The owners of the Ruby Slipper are expanding their booming breakfast business to a fourth location. Owners Eric and Jennifer Weishaupt began in Mid-City in 2008, then the CBD in 2010, and they brought brunch to Burgundy in the Marigny in November of 2012. Their location at 1005 Canal St. is opening this Friday.
Ruby Slipper serves breakfast all day long, as well as lunch items. Some of their most popular dishes include the Migas (Tex-Mex egg scramble) and the BBQ shrimp and grits.

KERMIT RUFFINS RE-OPENS ERNIE K-DOE'S MOTHER-IN-LAW LOUNGE
Posted Monday, January 20th, 2014 by M.D. Dupuy
The colorful building still bears Ernie K-Doe's name, but Kermit Ruffins is the new owner of the Seventh Ward's Mother-in-Law-Lounge (1500 N. Claiborne Avenue). Ruffins officially reopened the club Monday afternoon, and regulars of the past, along with many new faces, came to show their support.
Ernie K-Doe died in 2001, and his wife Antoinette K-Doe ran the business until she passed away in 2009. Antoinette K-Doe's daughter Betty Fox tried to keep the spot up and running, but eventually shut the club down in 2010. Once his plans for the building were secure, Ruffins earned the City Council's approval to reopen the lounge in 2012.

Preservationists nervously watching plans for Old Mandeville historical landmark hammered by Hurricane Katrina
If Mandeville had a landmark in the 1880s when it served as a summer resort for the upper crust of New Orleans, it was likely a stylish hotel on the shoreline of Lake Pontchartrain owned by Edmond Frapart and his wife Rosy Levy. Boasting a restaurant, a large hall for dancing and well-appointed rooms cooled by lake breezes, historians say Frapart's hotel was the site of annual summer soirees and was the social center of what was then a quaint waterfront village of tree-shaded cottages.
In the fall of 1894, creditors assumed control of the property from a debt-ridden Frapart and the hotel and its surroundings ended up in the possession of Douglas Anderson and his wife. Ten years later, the property and buildings were donated to a relatively-new New York-based charitable organization called the International Order of the King's Daughters and Sons, who for nearly a century operated the complex as the Rest Awhile, a retreat for underprivileged single mothers, their children and orphans.

Mayor Landrieu and NORA announce Façade RENEW program for commercial buildings in four targeted areas
JANUARY 21, 2014
NEW ORLEANS – Today, Mayor Mitch Landrieu and the New Orleans Redevelopment Authority (NORA) announced the launch of NORA’s Façade RENEW Program, a grant program designed to incentivize commercial property and small business owners to revitalize storefronts and building façades in four targeted areas of the city.
The program will make a total of $1 million in one-time, matching grants available to commercial property and business owners to upgrade and preserve historic integrity of their buildings. Façade RENEW will initially target the following areas:
Bayou Road between North Broad Street and Esplanade Avenue
Oretha Castle Haley Boulevard between Calliope Street and Jackson Avenue
St. Claude Avenue between Mandeville Street and Franklin Avenue
St. Claude Avenue between Congress Street and Poland Avenue
“For nearly four years, eliminating blight and revitalizing of our commercial corridors have been top priorities in my administration,” Mayor Landrieu said. “We’ve exceeded our 2014 goal of reducing the blight in New Orleans by 10,000 units and we’re doubling down in our efforts to bring more properties into compliance and restore the vitality of our neighborhoods.”

Kenner mayor touts plan for entertainment district
Kenner Mayor Mike Yenni is launching an ambitious plan to revamp the city’s Laketown that would turn the sparse park, pier and boat launch into an entertainment district potentially anchored by the Treasure Chest casino.
The proposed project, still in the early conceptual stages, would amount to a significant overhaul of the recreation area on the shore of Lake Pontchartrain.
It was a highlight of Yenni’s State of the City address Tuesday to the Kenner Professional Business Association.
A video that accompanied Yenni’s speech sketched out a vision for Laketown that includes a boardwalk area with rides and multistory developments with patios overlooking the lake and a marina.
“If anyone says Kenner can’t be a destination, they frankly don’t know what they’re talking about,” Yenni said.
City officials are in discussions with Boyd Gaming, which owns the Treasure Chest, to determine how the lake-based casino would fit into the larger plan. The city has also crafted a request for proposals to seek developers interested in building the project.
