I love seeing the ceramic floor tiles on the 7th floor in Officedweller's pic ...which was the former Eaton's Bargain Annex. I don't believe Sears ever had the 7th floor open for retail.

The other day I saw a few seagulls wandering around the floor checking things out - looked like they were shopping...

How much of the roof is going to be removed/replaced? Or is it just on the rotunda corner and that adjacent side?

sears used to use that floor than they downsized two floors i think and than once again they moved the outlet to the old furniture level

furniture was moved down to housewares and bedding floor

i remember when you caught the escalator though the 6th floor was all boarded up as you went up to the 7th before they moved it down

Not sure - the side facing Granville will have a deck - so they may stop where they are now, and also expose some on the Howe side for the deck on that side.
It'll be interesting to see how they reconfigure the rotunda floorplate - I suspect that they will build out the round to make corners - but based on the floorplans, the new protrusion is not centred where the current rotunda is centred.

Probably; but it won't make us gag like the old fixture. It'll just "be there" rather nondescript among the other buildings, I think.

I think this building is going to pop a bit more than renders suggest. Its not going to win any design awards but it's a massive glass box which should look pretty good in most lights.

Entire replacement is the plan at this point.

Interesting that they are relacing the entire top floor - any particular reason?
(earthquake codes?) Will the replacement floors be in steel or concrete?

Pics by me today:

Interesting extra beam at grade (could prevent a doorway there?)

The model in Built Form's pics shows glass (and maybe doorways?) at that location just south of the emergency exits:

Going back a few pages and looking at it, I think you have a point. Also, unless my perceptions are wrong, it seems they're going to take away that tacky reddish plazastone outside the TD Bank and replace with a level, neutral-coloured paving.

If the entire roof is being replaced then what is the problem preventing a green roof? If I recall correctly it was posted here that the roof couldn't handle the weight. Is it the upper steel floors that wouldn't be able to handle the weight as well?

In those cases, it's not just the roof that can't handle the weight, it's what supports the roof. I.e., the support columns, and the spans between them. Even the foundations may need to be beefed-up.

A green roof is incredibly heavy. The weight of soil, then saturated with water, and all above a commercial building with huge spans between support columns, is nothing to take for granted. If it's not been built into the original design, then it's a lot of work to ensure an existing structure is made strong enough for that much added stress.

I've been looking at the weight of a green roof and I was pretty astounded. Some weigh upwards of 1000kg/m² and retain over 300 liters/m²! Even a "lightweight" green roof weighs about 50kg/m² and all those get you is a light layer of moss.

Something decent for this building that people would actually want to go up and enjoy would start in the 300kg/m² range. That's a heck of a lot of weight!

I guess that's why - when you delve into Robson Square - it's a concrete reinforced bunker down there - supporting all the gardens above...

So it appears the new floorplate will be a lot smaller than the current rotunda?

It's hard to tell but I assume that the new edges of the floorplate will line up with some of the structural beams seen here.
It may go right back to the column on the right - from both the front and the side (marked in orange above).
