If so, I can't see that location surviving. There's nothing around there (yet); unless they're in it for the long game, waiting for Cogswell.

If not in it for the long game, it would shortly turn into a quasi-convenience store and likely close at 5pm, like everything else around that ugly hell hole, Scotia Square.

It seems like the grocery store is still at the "rumour" stage. I've heard that there might be a Needs or an urban format Sobeys similar to what has been opening in other cities. A Sobeys would be great.

Where did you hear this? I haven't heard anything and a quick internet search didn't turn up any results.

With all these ideas floated about urban groceries and street level retail, I kinda now wish these were all residential buildings, not hotel towers.

Would be great for downtown population and do more to ensure some of these ideas come to fruition and prosper.

I can remember people saying that Pete's Frootique would fail when it opened its downtown Halifax location. A Sobeys Express may do well- they seem to cater more towards a downtown crowd. What about a Shoppers Drug Mart or flagship NSLC?

As an observer from Vancouver and a Halifax native, I'm thrilled to see this development nearing completion as it will as life and vibrancy to the area.

I must say, however, the two hotel buildings look horribly oppressive and institutional, they remind me of social housing, far too much brick-work, too little glass, they just aren't attractive or welcoming, I wish they'd would have had a more light and airy feel to them.

In Vancouver, we currently have 14 mid-rise social housing developments in the works and many of them look far better than these towers. The apartment, however, is nicer and successfully borrowed some of that attractive elements from Vic Suites, which I love.

Yeah, the hotels kind of remind me of a hospital or a university residence. They might look a bit more natural as the surrounding area gets built up though.

Hospital-like for sure, just has a cold, institution feel and aesthetic.

As a Vancouver resident, I witnessed countless mistakes here as well and now we're stuck with them, that said, I think some of the other projects nearing completion are incredible for Halifax or any other Canadian city for that matter, 22nd Commerce Sq., The Roy, the central library, The Maple, and to some degree ( although I'd much prefer it on the waterfront like ours ) The Nova Centre are all outstanding! I'm exceedingly proud for my former hometown!

I think painting the bricks would be a bit of a improvement for this, brick facade look amazing when painted properly and have the right colour set. Halifax has so much ugly brick buildings that could blow people away visually if some of them were painted creatively enough, having it painted on the streetscape/ store fronts is what really works the best for brick buildings in distinguishing and separating places apart.

Hali87 nailed it with the university housing reference, here's a couple of shots of UBC housing here in Vancouver, the Citadel Redevelopment looks way too similar!

Too bad we couldn't give a facelift to the existing building next door, it never looked good, but it is really dated now beside the new ones.. Maybe there could be a redevelopment of this site too along with the building right on the corner!
