I've been desperate to see views of this project from areas that aren't the Yonge-Bloor intersection, so glad to report that The One is now visible from elsewhere!

I haven't been paying close attention. Is it still moving at a pace of one floor every 10 days or so?

I believe so with perhaps a slower pause for the most recent floor. I think if there was any further delay or slowness we would have heard plenty about it.

Revealed: 6,500 migrant workers have died in Qatar since World Cup awarded

There have been 6,750 deaths of south Asian migrants since Qatar was awarded the right to host the World Cup in 2010...

Data from India, Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka revealed there were 5,927 deaths of migrant workers in the period 2011–2020. Separately, data from Pakistan’s embassy in Qatar reported a further 824 deaths of Pakistani workers, between 2010 and 2020...

Deaths

India 2,711
Nepal 1,641
Bangladesh 1,018
Pakistan 824
Sri Lanka 557
https://www.theguardian.com/global-devel...-worker-deaths-qatar-fifa-world-cup-2022
Since it's now 2022, it's almost certain the worker deaths has exceeded 7,000.

Quote:
The Gulf state's small population of under three million has meant most people involved in construction have been workers from abroad.

Qatar's 'kafala system' is a set of labour laws which allow Qatari individuals or businesses to confiscate workers' passports and stop them leaving the country.

Human rights groups say this has given developers free reign to exploit them - exposing them to gruelling working conditions for little pay and not allowing them to go home until projects materialise...

There have been reports of migrant worker deaths that range from a few dozen to several thousand in the 12 years of preparation for the tournament...

The International Trade Union Confederation puts the figure at 7,000 by the time the tournament starts
https://news.sky.com/story/qatar-world-c...nt-worker-deaths-to-lgbt-rights-12731274

It's been well documented that PetroStates such as UAE, Qatar, and others subjugate South Asian workers, treat them as slave labour, give them unimaginably horrible working and living conditions for low wages, and confiscate passports so they can't leave the country until their contract for construction projects is finished.
One of the many reasons megaprojects such as these proposed by the Saudis are a disaster. Useless vanity projects for Sheiks with fragile egos.

That's insane. It goes without saying that the Saudis will kill innocent people to build their pipedream. As it said in your post they can even fly you to your beheading from inside the walls of the big brother compound. I was pointing out the obvious contradiction to their claims that it will be environmentally friendly. The main feature of it (500' mirror walls) is hostile to the environment.

Are they executing workers that miss their quota? Something doesn't jive with a slave labour force and the ridiculous cost of the games. Someone has to be lining their pockets more than Putin did in Russia.

From khalddon at UT:

Floors 17 & 18 are a bit taller than the below for mechanical, with the hotel floors below only being 3m tall, these are 5m and 4m.

This photo from Benito shows how the supports are a bit taller than previous:

So these floors will presumably take a bit longer than the pace they had been on with the 3m floors.

I think the ridiculous temps, long, grueling hours with lack of breaks, proper water and food kills a lot. Their hearts give out. Temps in Qatar can get between 45-50C!
PetroStates don't care as there is currently a near inexhaustible supply of cheap labour from South Asian countries.
Japan has an expression:karoshi, loosely translated to death from overwork.

My uneducated guess on grift: every construction firm and vendor involved is probably loosely related to Qatari government or higher ups in Qatar are getting kickbacks. Speaking of Putin/Russia, look at the cost of the Sochi Winter games compared to previous winter Olympics.

yes the gigantic proposed wall of glass in the desert is so dumb on many levels

A friend of mine from South Africa is working as a security officer in Qatar right now (head of a security division, got a very good offer) and from his stories I'd imagine most people died from accidents, the heat, or a combo of both. Working conditions for professionals are very good, but for general labourers it's a different world entirely. From what he's said it sounds like they will pull this off against all odds so people will likely forget about all the awful stuff.
