I like it, continues to improve. What's the height limit over there right near the interstate though? You can't add another couple floors?

Also: it might be nice to add a signage element above that garage door so it lines up with the other tall windows on the ground floor. If the first floor is a restaurant, that could be a nice spot for a sign (with spotlights of course). Maybe even a little marquee for band names if entertainment is planned.
Good suggestions... Im not sure who the eventual tenant will be but im in talks with several different folks. I think the front is a problem as is and Ill definitely try to make the garage blend in more. Appreciate it!

So very happy to see something moving forward with the Orpheum. The acoustics are fantastic in that building.

Better (vintage) photo of the Industries Building/Knights of Pythias/234 Loyola. As you can see, a lot of the historic ornamentation is lost, and I don't know if the new project will restore all of that. It's a bunch of nonprofits building affordable housing, so there probably isn't a lot of room in the budget for terra-cotta castings. Maybe there are some fiberglass appliques they could get off-the-shelf.

The top two floors and the ground floor have been completely altered, so they probably won't get restored to their historic glory either.

Im sure they will turn out a nice project. When tax credits are at stake things tend to turn out better. The top two floors was where the dancehall for men about to be deployed to world war 2 was correct?

Now the building behind it... would anyone want to live there considering what happened in it? I wonder if that is a big negative or if enough time has passed that people dont mind.

From the render I'm guessing its a standard 30 ft by 120 ft lot? The extra floors don't pencil out?

And ya'll know I'm no fan of parking garages but that one is CLEAN.

Re: the tragedy building, a buncha people weren't even born then. I don't see that being an issue.

Ardecila, you killing it with the historic pics of that building. Thought this one was good too (new though) from Curbed:

It's not like it would be the same building that caught fire. We now have a mandatory sprinkler policy in place. Had there been sprinklers in that building to begin with, the results would probably have been much different.

The parking garage is extremely fresh by New Orleans standards, but I keep feeling like it could be so much better. What is that brown wall inside the concrete frame? Why don't the street facades have more depth?

I recently saw the Santa Monica municipal garage, and apart from some peeling paint it is truly a great building. Even without retail on the ground floor, it manages to energize the area around it. Part of that is because things break away from the building: stairwells, elevators, solar panels, facade panels, etc so it doesn't feel like a box.

Does anyone know what is going up at Magazine and Orange?

Looks like it will have some covered parking with a structure above, judging by the foundation. I did some googleing and came up empty handed.

New Orleans hotel selling spree continues
http://neworleanscitybusiness.com/bl...pree+continues
Quote:
A flurry of hotel transactions in the New Orleans market continues into 2014, with a large French Quarter hotel and a boutique property selling within the past month.
The Astor Crowne Plaza Hotel at the corner of Canal and Bourbon streets and the Royal St. Charles Hotel on St. Charles Avenue were sold within the last month.
The sale of the Astor Crowne Plaza is unique in that it wasn’t the typical transaction between real estate investors that marked much of 2013, when more than a dozen hotels in the New Orleans area changed ownership. It was sold in early December to Starwood Capital Group, a Greenwich, Conn. investment management company.
While the 697-room property sold for $77 million according to Orleans Parish conveyance records, the deal is reportedly valued at more than $116 million when including debt that has burdened previous owners.

Dixie Brewer Owners Lose Latest Battle In Court:

The family that ran the Dixie Brewery from the mid-1980s until Hurricane Katrina has lost another court battle as it tries to save the original building from the wrecking ball.

Civil District Judge Paulette Irons on Tuesday dismissed the Bruno family's latest request for an injunction, possibly paving the way for contractors with the federal Department of Veterans Affairs and LSU to begin to remove asbestos and demolish at least part of the 107-year-old building. The brewery, dormant since that 2005 storm flooded it with 10 feet of water, sits within the footprint of the new joint medical complex being constructed in the Tulane-Graver neighborhood.

The Philosopher's Library May Be Bywater's Next Thing

In case the abundance of eating and boozing establishments in Bywater is getting to be too much, check out this (maybe) coming attraction of a completely different ilk. Artist Candy Chang (of the house-art Before I Die...fame) and writer James A. Reeves own a building on N. Rampart Street and want to put a library and coffee shop on the ground floor of the space. But this is no ordinary library — The Philosopher's Library will be "a sanctuary for confused, anxious, and worn-out people," with classic philosophical tomes and "life-changing books recommended by others." Chang and Reeves also want the "dignified public space" to be used for readings, discussions, and exhibitions. In order for this to happen, though, a zoning switch-up from a two-family residence to a neighborhood business has to be approved. and the owners are holding their required meeting tomorrow at 6 p.m.

Molly's, 13 Team May Bring New Tavern to St. Claude
the owners of Molly's at the Market and 13, Jim and Alana Monaghan and business partner Lloyd Miller, are in the planning stages of opening Junction, a train-themed neighborhood tavern and grill in the former A & N Grocery building at 3021 St. Claude Avenue. The team has already met with the Bywater Neighborhood Association, whose zoning committee has voted in support of the project, so things appear to be going well for them. Next up, the team must conquer the City Planning Commission.
