Metro Atlanta's CBDs and Metro DC's CBDs always looked similar to me, from a distance, with Atlanta's being taller. Maybe the tree-cover, the rolling hills, the random office boxes popping out all over, dunno.

That's probably the best juxtaposition of the Pennybacker bridge I've seen yet. Great shot!

Beautiful colors. I'm thinking the photo was taken well within the city limits, within the hilly west side of Austin north and south along 360 and even further west than that location. Those hills are covered with homes with fantastic views. You can go for about 5 miles to the left of the river and 10 or more miles to the right along 360 and be in hilly west Austin. Also probably 10 miles or so to the west toward Lake Travis. I used to take clients on drives through west Austin just to get their reactions. Also would take interviewees through the area if they were great candidates.

Yes. It most like is with in the city limits, if not the city jurisdiction. Loop 360 is part of the inner loop around Austin. This is taken maybe only 7 miles away from downtown. While this is not far by any means and you can still see downtown from places further out like Georgetown or Kyle. I do love this growing view.

I've spotted downtown from Hamilton Pool Rd way beyond Bee Cave. Also, coming in from Elgin/Manor now, there are great views from the tollway.

Chicago from Winthrop Harbor, near the IL/WI border roughly 43 miles north of downtown.

The curvature of the earth is in full effect here, as everything less than about 800' tall has fallen below the horizon of Lake Michigan at this distance.

Must be quite a ways out in the lake because it looks like it's facing directly south. That is probably the best Chicago distance shot I've seen. Must have had an absolute beast of a lens. At least 400-500mm.

^ the flickr photographer said it was shot from the marina itself at Winthrop Harbor, not out on the lake, so not truly due south, but close enough to it.

And yeah, that had to be one hell of lens at 43 miles out.

I think this one from 2 years ago from the other direction (Indiana dunes) is even better.

It's roughly 33 miles away (and likely aided by the higher elevation of the dunes), so a lot less of the skyline falls below the lake compared to the one above.

That is such a cool photo. When I was at the Dunes a few years ago, I tried to take a similar photo, stood on top of a dune and had a huge lens but too hot and hazy so I could not make out the skyline at all. I'm assuming it was a fall or winter (better clarity) and obviously shot in the evening. At 35 miles away, it was probably quite a bit brighter in Chicago due to the sun still being higher in the sky. Science!

^ sounds like you had the bad luck of a really hazy day.

I've been down to the dunes countless times in the summer and on sunny days you can usually at least see the skyline, even if it's not often crystal clear.

The above shots were obviously taken on days with especially dry air, so yeah, likely fall/winter.

These aren't skyline pictures, but I thought that they fit the thread anyway, and they would be particularly enjoyable in here.

What you see in the pictures here is the ability to look clear across an entire state. I took these pictures yesterday from Edgar Price Road in Maryland, just barely. The intersection that you see in the foreground is the intersection of Edgar Price Road with Maryland Line Road, just within Delaware. Edgar Price Road continues straight, but is called Levels Road in Delaware (because of how flat the farmland was, being around the crest of the Delmarva Peninsula).

Way off in the distance is the Salem Nuclear Power Plant near Salem, New Jersey. Not only can you see the cloud from the plant, but you can see the cooling tower itself: a physical object in New Jersey, visible from Maryland while standing on the ground.

If you're wondering why there's no little "Welcome to Delaware" sign in the picture, it's because Edgar Price Road is a dead end that just provides access to a few farms. US 301 cuts the farms off from the rest of Maryland. But the change in pavement indicates the state line.

Here's the spot where I took the pictures from.
