This is an idea of what Austin's skyline could look like. I added a 940' building just to show what that type of height could do. It's 940' to the top of the spire. I did leave out the ECC site and two of the GWTP buildings because I wasn't sure about the heights for those.

This is more of an aerial view just to show the locations of buildings better.

What do you guys think about a 900' tower in that spot? If it were to ever happen, where would you picture a 900' tower?

Austin is definitely growing up. Please let me know what your thoughts are.

Groovy post! I really like the 6th and Congress area...But I also think the ECC site should have an 800 ft. tower there

Apparently they decided to stack those two ~400' towers.

The architects and developer are in NYC getting some inspiration. That's all I can say now. Y'all should email Rhode partners and tell them you want an 800 footer at the ECC

If they are only at the "inspiration" phase after 8 or 9 years I don't see this as happening any time soon.

No kidding.... Unless the overall building specifics and draft design are complete and its more of a matter of the look and asthetics. Wouldn't they have several tower design proposals rather than one and then pick the best out of those?

I'm curious as to how the developers go through the process of selecting a tower design for a project? Does the developer ask for multiple designs from the hired architecture firm based on the information about the lot size, FAR and other restrictions as well as building use and square footage? Or do they work on one design and alter it several times over the course of the design phase? Do they hire the architectural firm first or do multiple firms compete with eachother by sending their designs to the developer?

I just hope they are not that far off cause if they are just now starting the design process then it may be another 2 years before we see any movement.

Austin planners give thumbs-up to skinny condo towers

By Lilly Rockwell
American-Statesman Staff

At the bustling intersection of Fourth Street and Congress Avenue is a rare commodity: A small parking lot — it only takes up about half of a city block — is one of the few developable lots left in downtown Austin, as condominium and apartment towers have sprouted up on the more spacious blockwide lots.

Until this month, developers weren’t sure if the city’s high-rise safety regulations made it financially feasible to build on these skinny lots. Building codes require at least two stairwells spaced apart, a requirement touted by safety experts because it provides a second evacuation route if some calamity makes the first stairway unusable.

I wish we could support a badass point tower office building there instead of condos. An office building would be more likely to be impressive architecturally.

The image that I made a few posts up actually has a 940' building at 4th and Congress. So that gives us an idea of what a tall skinny building would look like in that spot.

Doesn't Lincoln Properties already have plans for an office tower on the 4th and Colorado half of that parking lot? I thought it was announced around the same time as the 5th and Colorado office tower although no renderings were ever shown.

Last I heard it was only 5 levels. I think that lot is subjected to the Warehouse District Overlay.

I moved the Butler Park/Auditorium Shores and Riverside Drive posts to the transportation thread since it is more of a transportation issue I guess.
