The excavation is well along now. It was interesting walking around the site today and getting a sense of the different levels. When I left I went south on Raymur under Hastings.

When will the CoV push to remove the Hastings viaduct?

Never? Unlike the Georgia and Dunsmuir Viaducts it actually achieves something useful - grade separating a busy road from a railroad. If anything, the forward plan is to add another one at Malkin to replace the crossing at Venables, to go with the fairly new Powell Street Viaduct and fully grade separate the corridor to enhance the freight capacity and flexibility for the Port.

The best thing to do with things like the Hastings Viaduct is to bury the vacant lots surrounding the abutments with viaduct-facing buildings, like the Strathcona Village building is doing, so as to integrate it with the rest of Hastings.

Don't forget, the city recently constructed a Powell viaduct to help facilitate car and rail traffic in the area.

So for those keeping count, Vision has added 1 viaduct so far during their time in office.

traffic sure was jammed up around the area yesterday .... lots of looky-loos watching the erection in person. I may have been one of them ... as you know me I love watching groups of men working on erections.

And downtown takes a big leap eastward! I think this on its own is going make a big change to the feel of the inner city, and is the beginning of a substantial leap outward akin to the development around SE FalseCreek out to 12th & Kingsway. All of the development going on throughout the region which is at this scale is making Vancouver feel much bigger; maybe even more than the towers, at least at this time.

Thanks for the updates.

This degree of density should have been the bare minimum granted along the Cambie/Canada Line Corridor between stations. Actually, the bare minimum should have been even greater than this.

It won't be soon. That entire stretch will be continuous condos fairly in the next few years.
