I think I may be in a very small minority here. haha

I'm a staunch conservative that enjoys Austin and wants to see a vibrant downtown.

Anecdotally the most hardcore NIMBYs I have know have been liberals. Of course there are conservative suburbanites that you meet that show disdain for downtown and all the growth too.... but the people who actually show up to protest and make it their life mission to stop a lot of these great developments are liberals.

I don't think it's so much a political thing.... just the actual personality of a person- positive or negative. And whether a person has lived in a dense urban environment before....not so much Republican or Democrat.

Politics doesn't make a NIMBY. It's that stuff in their backyard that makes them.

Things will be great when you're downtown.

True. I'm very sentimental when it comes to history and things from the past, both mine and a place's. But I'm not foolish either. Austin is growing up. It needs a vibrant downtown area.

I'm not a cyclist or much of a pedestrian guy. I like my pickup. I like my own elbow room. Give me a handful of acres and a house, and I'd be happy. So I'm not exactly the kind of guy you'd expect to find on a site like this. My main reason I support creating a dense downtown is curbing suburban sprawl. I love the rolling hill sides with dense trees, exposed limestone, creeks and lakes. I hate driving out 71 now and seeing houses upon houses fouling up what used to be a beautiful trip. I'm all for people moving downtown if it'll stop that sprawl.

And when I say give me a few acres and a house, I don't mean in suburbia. I'm talking Lampasas County or something way out in the Hill Country.

While there is a correlation with urban/democrat and rural/republican, this is the viewpoint I wish more people "liberal NIMBY" or "conservative hate everything city" types would understand. People are going to move here, either we can spread them out or build them up. Gas prices and such for future generations must also be thought taken into account and the walk-ability of our city as it grows. I grew up in Wimberley and want the hill country kept beautiful. People sticking their heads in the sand won't accomplish that.
