Very sad. I used to shop there quite a bit.... The odd thing is I can't remember where I lived when I shopped there.

Some kind of permission?

Hello Flar,
I am interested in using one of your photos for a project, specifically carts2. Would that be ok with you? Please let me know. I'd be glad to credit the photo to you and whatnot.
Thanks.

You still have many chains up there.

Great thread, Flar, hahaha! You forgot to show pictures of one of our countless overcrowded subdivisions of look-alike homes.

Actually when I took these pictures I had just bought a new camera and wanted to try out some easy night shots.

They're in Hamilton, tons of urban housing in Hamilton, for example see this thread: http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/showthread.php?t=144197

I wish they would change up the design of some of the stores at least, everything just looks identical no matter where you go.
I wish they would too (and I say this as someone who generally likes big-box retail and doesn't see it as the Great Satan). But these chains are mostly concerned with operational efficiency, not style points.

It was interesting to see some unfamiliar-to-America names in those photos.

Hey, thank you. I must get to Hamilton. Reminds me of Canada's Pittsburgh. I love your photo threads of it.

We have many towns that look like this, built for the mills. They have the same exact reason as boring urban sprawl America. Just for some reason, they are much much more interesting.

So many horrible American exports--Wal-mart taking the top prize. At least you guys still have Tim Hortons. Starbucks doesn't stand a chance against them.

Tim Hortons sucks and there's too many of them. It would be nice to have a choice, but there's nothing but shitty Timmy's around every few corners.

The discussion in this thread reminded me of how different shopping was for me when we moved from Toronto. In Toronto we were used to shopping at Dominion, Loblaws and IGA. When we moved, suddenly we had to get used to No Frills, The Barn, Fortinos and Sobeys. Hamilton and Toronto are very different as far as grocery shopping goes.

I recently learned though that things were the same about 30 years ago. Apparently there was Dominion, Loblaws and IGA in Hamilton back then. They were all changed to The Barn, Fortinos and Sobeys/Price Chopper respectively.

Of course the rest of the stores in this thread can be found in pretty much any town/city in Canada or North America. Nothing unique or regional about them.

You HAVE to get to Hamilton!!!

As a Hamiltonian, I was SO impressed with Pittsburgh when I was there in Nov (07). Check out my signature, I have a link to my photothread of my time there!

Hamiltonians & Pittsburghers (??) are pretty similar... we work hard, and we play hard. Pittsburgh was a great city to party in! Lots going on!

Starbucks has just recently noticed Hamilton on the map, and it's 1st 'urban Hamilton' location is set to open on Locke Street in the next few days?

And Hamilton is uber-saturated in the Tim Horton's market. You'll often hear other Southern-Ontarians joke that there's one on every corner in this city... it's not a joke... it's pretty accurate! hahaha
