I think it looks good, but I'm no architect! I've been trying to learn a bit by lurking here and here.

As said, we need this a lot. Assiniboine is such a lovely street.

I am truly excited about this project! I love the new design of it (Vancouver-style glass tower) and how it will be tall enough to impact the downtown skyline.

I wish more developments like this for the new year!

The most recent one. From what I understand and have been told, it will represent a typical Vancouver-style glass type skyscraper. Perhaps with a little less "green" on it, but still a step up for the city nonetheless.

I know this was already posted in the construction thread, but then I saw this one and though it would be more appropriate here:

Downtown highrise apartment block delayed

A new highrise apartment block Mayor Sam Katz has lauded as a sign of the downtown's vibrancy has been delayed for another year.

Crystal Developers has asked the city for a one-year extension to rezone land on Assiniboine Avenue to build the 25-storey Heritage Landing project, which will include about 200 residential apartment units.

Katz heralded the proposed $45-million project as a symbol of Winnipeg's blossoming downtown, as it will be the city's first residential highrise since Fort Garry Place in 1990.

What is people's take on this? Could there be funding issues with the project? Any other issues that may be the cause of the delay?

they're asking for an extention on the dead line to start work if i am reading this right or the zoning will expire

I've heard that it is much more expensive to build on that site than it was on the original site. Different soil conditions. Maybe that is causing a financing issue or maybe they want the city to bridge the gap. Just a guess.

concidering the legal action crystal coulda taken against the city over 100 main st providing some gap funding is prolly still cheaper then going to court and fighting

But if thats the case, would the city do that?

I jus hope this thing doesn't get cancelled now - ther have some sweet proposals that have been cancelled in this city, seemingly due to little things that turn into big things.

On the high rise front though, there will be some downtown activity this summer though with the Hotel across mts c and the canad inns hotel on HSC

I don't think the proposal for the hotel across from MTS centre is for a high rise. It's suppsoed to be a boutique hotel iirc.

Ah yes, I think you're right.

Could a boutique hotel still be at least a mid rise? Say 150 rooms. Could still be like 8 stories non?

I don't know why I was under the impression it was going to be a highrise - had something to do w something I thought Katz said about a high rise going up on portage that was gonna be 18 - 20 stories I think. I guess I assumed it was going to be the hotel. I remember thinking he wasn't referring to the Hydro building cause a) its already built and b) its 22 stories. This was like in his mayoral debate last year or something. He might have meant Heritage landing, I might have misheard it.

Just a note, a boutique hotel can be as tall as the owner wants. I stayed at Hotel 71 in Chicago and it was 36 stories tall. I know Chicago is an exception but i believe "boutique" just means no chain hotel affiliation.

Having said this, i can't imagine that it would be a supertall at this location. I would guess around 10 storeys as well.

Apparently the province and city have agreed to continue the housing unit incentive plan for downtown multi-family buildings. I didn't hear the value but i would expect it would be another $20 million. This might help this project.
