It's crazy that they build those ramps then demolish them during construction. Something that would never be done in the US due simply to the cost. I wonder if they recycle those materials or just throw them out. Seems like a huge wasted if it's the latter.

I recall the WTC having a sizable temporary ramp. Anyway, the steel rebar is definitely recycled.

When building the new Bay Bridge in San Francisco, two huge temporary freeway decks were built at different times to accommodate traffic flow. The bridge was completely shut down twice for an entire weekend so the ramps could be shoehorned into place while the old ramps were torn out. Then permanent ramps were built for the final phase, and the temporary ramps were destroyed. Quite a lot of labor, engineering, and materials for something so temporary, but necessary.

The steel in the core is incredibly impressive to look at. These construction photos really captured my imagination. Cool!

Photos: Wuhan Greenland Center Brings China to New Heights

Quote:
2016 started off with the official completion of the Shanghai Tower, recognized as the second tallest building in the world. Topping out at 632 metres and 128 storeys, the twisting structure has quickly become a jewel in Shanghai's crowded skyline. But already, there are other buildings in the nation vying to be the highest tower in China. One of these is the Wuhan Greenland Center, a skyscraping glass edifice expected to rise 125 floors and 636 metres above the streets of Central China's most populous city.

...seems tall, just for tallness sake!

...makes ya wonder how this will look in 200 years, as it rots, and sways, and bends in the wind (like old French castles, all of ruined majesty!!)

(sears tower example awesomeness)

Exactly. Seems like the ffloor area to core ratio is low. Wouldnt it be more efficient to build a shorter building requiring less core/mechanical space?

Shorter buildings are almost always more efficient, literally speaking and energy-wise. Most supertalls are built in the quest of winning the dick-wagging contest of who has the tallest building, not as something for logic's sake
