Construction Updates:

250 14th St

1340 Franklin: boom crane going up

1721 Webster: boom crane going up

Tonight, this crane was in full swing.

It appears that 1340 Franklin is still in prep, and think they will not fully erect it till overnight or next weekend when weekday traffic is at its slim.

Exciting to see these come more to fruition

19th & Harrison

Valdez Corridor. As FVN posted a little while ago, the Alta Waverly site that burnt down last year is indeed active again, with what looks like a new crane in place.

Some major progress has been made on the revamping along the West side of Lake Merritt

Exciting to see the protected bike lanes take shape as well

^ Great project. This needs to happen in SF too along the Embarcadero, from AT&T Park all the way to Fisherman's Wharf.

The Embarcadero has bike lanes on either side for the entire stretch between AT&T and the Wharf. It also has the "Blue Greenway" stretching from AT&T (South side of Mission Creek) all of the way down to the county line at Candlestick Point. If anything, the Blue Greenway just needs some additional funding for more benches, lighting, and landscaping.

Right, but it’s actually not all that safe given the amount of bike and vehicle traffic. I’ve seen many near accidents along the Embarcadero despite the green bike lanes.

At least there are lanes for bikes. Expecting no accidents is a bit of a fallacy. No matter the setup, there will be accidents one way or another.

Uh, what? Where did I say expect no accidents? Accidents can occur on both separated bike lanes and bike lanes on the road, and yes, bike lanes are better than nothing at all. However, a protected bike lane would offer a more pleasant biking experience and have far less accidents than a regular bike lane, by eliminating collisions with vehicles and "dooring".

Excellent photos: Oakland rises!...literally.

But seriously, nearly forty years ago when I returned from England to the Bay area as a high school grad and musician in need of a day job, I took a gig at "Fox Photo," 1333 Broadway. By then, white flight had gutted a once vibrant Downtown, and City Centre consisted solely of the two Clorox buildings and fenced-off open spaces. The rest of Downtown as a crime-ridden, forlorn wreckage, the consequence of institutionalized American racism via white flight and tax-supported, racially exclusive suburbanization.

How moving it is, for me, to return once again to the Bay Area from a three decade sojourn in New York City (and Britain and France) to witness and experience the revival and rise of Oakland as a multiracial hipster powerhouse.

Oh, I do get it about displacement. I'm exiled to San Francisco (where I was born and spent my earliest youth before going abroad), as the Oakland nabes I covet have become far too expensive –– and we're not talking about Montclair, Crocker Highlands, Rockridge, or Sequoyah, either.

But that is the way of things: when I married and brought our blended family to Manhattan, we sought a home in Brooklyn, reputed multiracial sanctuary for bohemians, creatives, and working-class alike. We were priced out and found refuge in Cabrini Heights, then rebranded as "Brooklyn in Manhattan." Talk about ironic payback.

With Oakland ascendant, Brooklyn by the Bay might become Brooklyn in ways not anticipated: Gentrification and its Discontents.

Still, Downtown Oakland rising by the day? Love it.

Uh, what? Where did I say you said you expect no accidents? I was merely stating the self-evident because you were sounding dramatic.

You are most certainly right!

Also, 1721 Webster is starting to climb out of the ground.
