What does everyone think of renaming the former Coast Guard site to "Fundy Quay"?

Would anyone prefer the historic name "South Market Wharf"? IMO the latter has more marketing appeal.

From reliable sources, Bath & body works, Bed bath and beyond and Princess Auto will all soon set up shop in Saint John.

Bath & Body Works is scheduled to open in April. Princess Auto and BB&B will both open sometime in 2013.

I like South Market Wharf. Maybe over time Saint Johners will refer to it as South Market Wharf or South Wharf, who knows.

Great news Eric.

As for South Market Wharf. Maybe a section of Fundy Quay could be known as South Market Wharf as North Market Wharf is to Market Square.

I'd rather the whole area be known as South Market Wharf other than Fundy Quay. We only started hearing the latter when the developers started referring to it as such.

The Wikipedia article does state that Saint John is the largest city in NB, which was true as of the 2011 census (Moncton is less than a thousand souls behind though). Did you correct the article? It's correct right now anyway.

Moncton can only be fed north shore NBers for so long, you will see signs of peeking. Saint John is growing, I will not be surprised to see Saint John maintain largest city status. The city is in transition and it beginning to start a new. If Saint John received the funding Moncton gets, things would be different.

Saint John needs to fight for fair equity. The city is the economic powerhouse, look at the GDP.

But I do believe SJ is done sitting sitting in silence. It will become the city it once was.

I don't care for the name Fundy Quay. South Market Wharf sounds much better right off the top.

I also wasn't quite sure about the name Peel Plaza either, if it wasn't for the police station, A newcomer would probably believe that's where the kids went to street race.

For the benefit of those that don't know the significance of "Peel" - Sir Robert Peel was a UK Prime Minister and British Home Secretary that founded the Metropolitan Police and brought in the modern concept of policing. The police station partially covers Peel Street that was named in his honour. The term "Bobbies" is derived from his first name Robert.

The same reason we can never create a post-secondary institution Uptown called Fundy University.

I also think South Market Wharf is the better name. At the very least, I hope they retain the name for the promenade along the southern side of the Slip (hopefully with a wonderful, animated array of storefronts/cafes/restaurants to boot!). The name Peters' Wharf could similarly be kept for the southern portion of the site.

I really hope there's an announcement soon: we were told it was only "a few weeks away" back in September!

Is there any space in McAlister Place at the moment for an H&M? It seems like they're around 15k square feet in all other outlets in the region.

It seems like they're expanding quickly into Atlantic Canada... they recently opened a location in Fredericton, and a little while back opened in Moncton, and Halifax. Now there are rumours of St. John's.

I'd hate to see Saint John get left out in the cold.

Not surprising. Saint John has become a major retail hub.
