I don't expect exquisite architecture out of a Hydro substation, but this is a fucking disgrace.

Are there not better locations for these substations? The area surrounding that block will be doomed. Who wants to live across from a prison?

It's not just the substation—it's the massive surface parking for the church. This has very quickly become the very worst subsection of the Exchange District.

I do believe it is technically within the boundaries of The Exchange.

It is a slap in the face for the area. What could become a vibrant stretch of urban bliss (Adelaide), is vanishing with this horrible bunker.

Wasnt there an issue with the initial branding? They wanted the "Canada Inns" name but it was taken and they couldnt secure it so went with CanadInns with the logo meant to resemble an "A" after "Canad"?

I know a lot of people, especially from out of town, call it Canada Inns. Seems like a pretty stupid branding when you purposely confuse the market about what your name is.

I have a friend that runs a hotel and I already told the gf (who's Christmas party was at Club Regent hotel) that she needs to get her work to go to my pals hotel next year. Its a smaller operation but the food is 100 times better and their banquet presentation is too.

This thing looks more or less as I'd expect a Hydro substation to look to someone passing by... basically like an industrial building or a warehouse with big blank walls. So given that we knew what was slated for this site, it's not like some huge surprise.

That said, the location is regrettable and it does reduce the potential of Adelaide St.

I guess if anything it will act a clear boundary between what is in and what is outside of the de facto Exchange District walkable area (regardless of what the official boundaries are). So it might help build a bit of critical mass along Princess and Adelaide, as any potential for development on Hargrave or points west is gone for at least 15 years now... it's just too far past the surface lot/substation dead zone. In other words, it more or less forces development to take place to the east.

CanadInns is a ridiculous name for a hotel... we're somewhat numb to it from hearing it repeated over the years. But they do deserve respect for building a hotel chain from scratch in an area that is overlooked by the big hotel chains. Not too many others out there are building tall new hotels.

I worked there when they did the transition from HospCorp and we all that it was goofy. Actually most of us thought it was a typo.

They are being sued, arent they? With the intent to force liquidation to pay off some loans or something? I wonder how well they're really doing... It struck me as odd when the brother left the company.

Crazy story about that whole scenario too. It turned into an epic disaster. Family deserves a lot of credit for the work they did to come out the other side with a really nice hotel and first rate banquet services.

Excellent points, esquire.

There are far worse-looking substations around. Give them credit for spending the money to use limestone and brick instead of straight-up concrete like they could have. At least they are making an attempt for the 'prison' to blend into the surrounding area. Besides, it's not exactly like Calvary Temple is a prime example of pedestrian-friendly architecture, either. It's as much of a bunker as the substation.
