The height is definitely tantalizing. But when seeing the floors one can get confused as to how its double the height of towers with a similar number of levels.

I really like that they opted to add the fake window lighting at the top. Can't wait to see the lighting between the segments in the open areas too.

That's Mercedes House. A luxury rental tower.

Am I the only one who doesn't see the appeal in this building? It's the tallest residential building in the world, sure, but it's so tall that it's greatly out of place with all the other buildings and it distracts from the beauty of the Manhattan skyline. It could be (partly) excused if it looked aesthetically pleasing, but it's just a box. It has no design to it.

No, you aren't the only person.

I don't understand your logic (most highrises are more or less "just a box" and a building can have a good design regardless or whether or not it's a modernist box) but you aren't the first person to express such an opinion.

Mice high rises are 1,400 feet and stick out of the skyline like a sore thumb. If it weren't for that I wouldn't have a problem with it.

^ There will be more 1,400+ footers at 57th street, no worries.

Maybe it's just me, but anything over 1,300 ft in midtown makes it look out of place. Midtown looks nice because the buildings are more or less the same height.

On the contrary, Midtown has developed a 700 - 800 foot plateau. That doesn't look good. A good skyline needs some peaks.

Coming over the George Washington the city looks nothing short of AMAZING with 432 park Avenue peaking out over the top of the skyline.
Soon enough the spires will rise higher than this.

I like the design and height of 432 Park Ave and if you don't agree, you're wrong.
This city is built for skyscrapers.
The taller, the better!

Yeah, I gotta say, that Empire State sure sticks out like a sore thumb. Please. These buildings are called "supertalls" for a reason. They're supposed to stand out above all others.
We don't want a flat skyline where everythng blends in nicely with no contrasting heights - that's what midtown had become.

But your concerns are wrongly placed anyway, as this will be but one of many such supertalls in the area. It will lose it's ability to stand out somewhat.

Feast your eyes on the many "standout" towers set to rise on the skyline...
