According to this, aside from their last year (in which they won the regular season title) the team never won anything.

Individual awards (again in their last season) went to Dave Dryden (MVP, Best goalie) and Wayne Gretzky (Rookie)

^ Jets beat the Oilers for the last Avco Cup in '79, the only time the Jets beat the Gretzky-led Oilers in the playoffs and the last time a Winnipeg pro hockey team won a championship.

Not to open this old jar of worms again - but today there was a boost for a possible Canada 2026 bid in that European and Asian countries aren't allowed to bid for 2026.

We simply don't have the stadiums to host a world cup, nor would we have a use for them afterwards. We won't get it.

As much as I generally couldn't care less if we hosted, we mostly do have the stadiums (as has been covered in this thread over and over)... We'd just need to install grass in all CFL stadiums (could even be a temporary measure), add some extra temp seating à la Grey cups, build a new one in Calgary, reno Olympic in Montreal, and build one in Halifax. That takes you to 10, which is all you'd really need (and far cheaper than what other countries have done in recent WC bids).

As for further use... All stadiums are already in use by the CFL (or a combination of the CFL, MLS, CIS, and NASL). A fair bit of use right there. Highly likely that Halifax would end up with a CFL team if a stadium is built there as part of the bid as well.

Correct me if I'm wrong but we only have 4 stadiums with capacity >50K and they're all built in the 70's and 80's:

Commonwealth - 1978
Olympic - 1976
BC Place - 1983
Rogers Centre - 1989

Don't give me no crap about: a) renovations done to these antiques, or b) adding temporary bleachers to our newer but smaller stadiums. To paraphrase Kanye: "I ain't sayin FIFA's a gold digger, but they ain't messing with no makeshift bigger" stadiums.

What specifically are those four stadiums lacking?

I think Canada should only submit a bid for the 2026 World Cup under the following conditions: (1) existing stadiums will be used for the most part, and (2) existing artificial turf will be used, gridiron lines and all. I'd be interested to see if FIFA gets desperate enough to accept those conditions. Otherwise, they can pick some other country which better meets their absurd standards. (And I say that as someone who plays recreational soccer.)

Agreed 100%. Holding the WC would be great, but it should be on our terms, which should most definitely not include going billions into debt to pay for new stadiums just because FIFA says so.

umm, yes we do And even if we had to build 1 in halifax and/or 1 in Quebec city they could both be used for CFL and NASL teams in the future

Spain,Brazil and Russia all played and will play in reno'd Stadiums. And also a few had to be expanded for the world cup You think they were all brand new?. Not sure what you're going on about. In what world is our newer smaller stadiums as in IGF,NMS, THF,BMO and The concept in Calgary not good enough for a world stage? get outta here

spain 2010 stadiums weren't all that fancy either

NASL is going to be a nonfactor in Canada by 2018. Ottawa's pulling out and Edmonton presumably will when the Canadian Premier League gets going. NASL and MLS don't recognize Canadians as domestic/home-grown players currently whereas the USL does, which makes developing Canadians have more value as well as not having to use Canadians in International player slots. The CPL is targeted to begin play in 2018 (if rumours are to be believed) so those stadiums would be more likely used for that.

With rumours of the Canadian PL floating around, Calgary Foothills SC just announced a new $10M year-round indoor facility for their teams, soo..

Did you mean to say South Africa? Spain last hosted the World Cup in 1982.

Yes and the Berlin Stadium was built in 1935 and Maracana in 1950. What's your point? We can host the WC no problem, as we have discussed a million times, just need the political will to do it.

Quoting Kanye West doesn't exactly give me confidence in what your 3 posts can bring to the debate.

TD Place Stadium was completely reno'ed/rebuilt prior to the WWC in 2015, so...

I think it will happen for the most part on our own terms. We've learned our lesson with white elephants, can't see that happening again, especially in today's environment where the feds will only fund sports infrastructure under certain conditions.

Ah yes, Maracana..

There has been criticism of the cost of the renovation - nearly $500m (£320m) - because the stadium has already seen a number of upgrades.

BC Place and Skydome aren't going to be expanded beyond their current limits and don't really need that much renovating...so my question would be: how much money would you be willing to pump into the Big O? And would that be better off than simply building a new stadium?
