It makes me think if the CN Tower is losing its international recognition with younger generation with being no longer the tallest. Then again, Burg Khalifa isn't that old.

From my experience, we used to make a big deal of the CN tower being the tallest structure in the world up to the 90's but it eventually started to be recognized simply as an iconic building as opposed to one of the tallest in the world. There are now many supertalls around the world and many people have lost track of the top 5, or even which one is the tallest. I don't think it is well known that Burj Khalifa is the current tallest building, but back when the CN Tower held the title I think a lot more people knew about it. Maybe because it was the tallest for several decades.

It may just have loomed larger in our consciousness as the world's tallest because we are Canadian, or it could also be that the "tallest" title was held by a single structure for a much longer period than these days, where there seems to be a new tallest every couple of years.

Unless I am mistaken the Sears Tower was the world's tallest skyscraper for a fairly long period as well.

It's easier to remember the record-holder when the record doesn't change for a while.

I heard someone say that CN stood for Canada's National.

I haven't thought of that. I've met my share in my youth that thought the CN Tower was in Montreal. They also thought Bush & Clinton were our leaders.

I love walking around it, the scale of the of the buildings and plazas are impressive, but i love the peak at Yonge and Bloor. The core used to have one but now from many angles its plateaued out. I hope the new Commerce Court comes to fruition and ads a bit of a peak back. Its going to be hard to beat the peak when The One tops out.

Prince's Island by Juha Uitto, on Flickr

With all the changes and additions to Calgary's skyline (you can barely see a couple of them in this shot), this view essentially hasn't changed in the last twenty years.

Stephen Ave really is an underappreciated asset.

Definitely. I appreciate aA for delivering quality on tight budgets but, they don't stack up to the names in the Financial core. Ignoring architectural quality, the midtown skyline does have that postmodern, spread out, randomness that is very popular.
