If the new Moncton Arena isn't under some sort of Irving naming banner i'll eat my hat. If anything, JDI and IOL will likely fight with each other over the naming rights.

That said, outdoor football stadiums tend to be lightly used and don't really belong downtown. In an average year at IGF there might be 10 football games, and maybe three or four other events that draw capacity or near capacity crowds. That's a hell of a lot downtime for the remaining days of the year.
Stadium sharing is one way around this. In Ottawa TD Place is shared between the Redblacks and the NASL Fury soccer club...between the two there is 1 sometimes two home dates at least every few weeks. Works well.

Not to mention the 67s play in a 10,000 seater below the stadium.

^ Even stadium sharing doesn't solve the fundamental problem of there not being a space large enough to accommodate such a facility. Ottawa is lucky to have Lansdowne Park which has been there since forever... there's no chance that a stadium would be built there today if one hadn't already existed in one form or another on that site for 100 years.

Ottawa would still have had Lebreton flats.

^ True. In any event though, there is no such space in downtown Winnipeg that could have accommodated IGF. One of the earlier stadium proposals called for construction in Point Douglas which is a pretty down at the heels mishmash of residential and light industrial land just north of downtown which was further complicated by very awkward transportation connections. That concept didn't last long.

Ya, but that was only recently made available through the competition. In the late 80s when we were building a case for the Sens return, Terrace Development (company behind the franchise at the time) asked the NCC if they would consider allowing him to build his arena at LeBreton Flats. They straight up refused. Why we now have the Corel Centre 35 kilometers west of downtown.

Aren't the orange banners redundant in years where there's a white banner? Is this commonplace?

It's a little ... um ... ostentatious.

I prefer the Winnipeg approach to championship banners (just don't win anything and save on banner costs).

It would be a real mess at the Bell Center if we had banners for all these titles

What surprised me in the picture is having NHL at the top of the banner - does this mean there are banners for the WHA days??

Correct. Though I've heard they have not made it into Rogers Place. Hopefully coming, just not up yet.
