Part 1: Every Premier League club’s young player to watch in 2022

With the new year fast approaching, Ryan Baldi picks out the young players to watch in 2022. Part 1 of 2.
Ryan Baldi sport.optus.com.au December 24 2021

With a new year comes new hope, and few things spark hope in the hearts of football fans more than the emergence of a bright and hopeful youngster at their beloved club.

The strain the coronavirus pandemic has placed on squad depth and the relatively new allowance of five substitutions per game means the fraught pathways between Premier League academies and clubs’ first teams have broadened slightly of late.

In the first of a two-part series, we’ve picked out one young player from each Premier League club who could make waves in 2022

Part 2: Every Premier League club’s young player to watch in 2022

Nothing thrills and galvanises a football fan base quite like the emergence of a fearless and gifted youngster taking their first steps in the professional game.

And, as the coronavirus pandemic continues to stretch squad depth to the limit, 2022 promises increased opportunities for ready rookies.

Here, in the final installment of a two-part series, we take a look at one young star ready to break through at each Premier League club in the new year..

Wolverhampton Wanderers – Theo Corbeanu

Canadian forward Corbeanu left his home nation for England in 2018, aged just 16, first attending a trial with Leicester before impressing in a try-out for Wolves, who offered the youngster a scholarship contract.

A frequent scorer at under-23s level, Corbeanu was a regular feature on the first team’s bench last season, before eventually making his debut in May, coming on as a substitute in a 2-0 defeat to Tottenham.

Already capped six times for Canada, the 19-year-old is spending this season on loan in League One with Sheffield Wednesday. A strong showing upon returning to his parent club for 2022-23’s pre-season could see him earn a sustained spot in Bruno Lage’s squad.

Is the Hamilton instead of Vancouver decision a "cold weather advantage" one?

No, two reasons. One is the travel required as it is the middle game of the cycle. It was deemed better by all to not put the players through the extra travel and what it entails coming and going. The other reason is it is not an advantage vs the USA. Many of their players grew up in similar circumstances on artificial pitches and cold weather games. So we are at Hamilton to ease travel and also if we get a game with weather like we had vs Mexico the field will be easier to clear with less damage than with natural turf at BMO.

Coincidentally, I hadn't meant for this to happen when I posted these stories, Mitrovic and Corbeanu were childhood friends and are still close. And both will likely begin to feature in our NT in the not too distant future. Depending on roster size and if we make it to Qatar I don't think they will both make it this cycle as it may be too soon for them but both are progressing rapidly.

Multiple commentators on Sportsnet and TSN are saying Toronto FC have officially signed Lorenzo Insigne, which would be the biggest international signing by a Canadian club by far. Apparently a 5.5yr deal worth ~C$90 Million

Edit: It gets even crazier. A couple respectable MLS and European sources are now claiming TFC are lining up another massive offer for Andrea Belotti, looking to again outbid Italy's big clubs. Could be quite a makeover in Toronto this winter.

That is crazy. Have to wait until it's confirmed to get excited but that pair could well be the most respectable duo of players to ever be signed onto an MLS club, not just a Canadian one? Haven't followed too closely but the league has gotten a few past-their-prime Europeans like Rooney and Pirlo but hardly something like a duo of the most recent Euro cup champions.

Not being an overly-intense MLS fan (I basically only care about the Canadian and Concacaf Champions Leagues), what I'm reading seems to suggest Insigne would already be the biggest MLS signing ever even without Belotti. He's better than Giovinco on paper and the only other contenders are Beckham and Ibrahimovic, who were both long past their prime when they signed in the States and only went over for name recognition, really.

All the major outlets here are reporting Insigne as being in 'advanced talks' but a number of the pundits themselves (as well as Sky Sport in Italy) are saying the deal is done with Insigne. CBC saying the deal hasn't been signed yet.

As for Belotti, looks like its still early days but wow, TFC are clearly looking to splash out to put this dismal past season far, far behind them.

Not only is Insigne better than Giovinco but he's actively on Italy's national team and is in discussions for the World Cup in Qatar in November. It's a big money move from TFC and is a big push in the right direction for MLS as a whole.

Look for Doug Ford to make an announcement at 11 am EST that will likely affect the upcoming Canada/US WCQ. Looking like either the game will be cancelled or played without fans. The date will be important, it may only extend until January 21 which will render the above moot.

https://ottawasun.com/sports/soccer/...tponed-reports

The latest in the breathless TFC drama has this week's rumoured meeting in Rome between club officials and Insigne postponed until 10 Jan. No mention of why, though I should think it would be Covid or flight cancellations.

By the latest indications, Insigne has all but signed the deal with Toronto at this point. This means a move for Altidore or Soteldo could be coming soon too. Soteldo is apparently attracting interest in Brazil with TFC asking a US$7mil transfer fee.

Widespread reports here and in Italy are also linking Genoa captain Domenico Criscito to Toronto. Some Italian sources are reporting Criscito and Insigne are both coming to Toronto as a confirmed fact:

Sounds like Belotti coming to Toronto is up in the air as AC Milan have made an offer. We'll see if he goes to his boyhood club or if TFC outbid them with an offer he can't refuse, as with Insigne.

EDIT 4 Jan: Reports out that Insigne to Toronto is official. Announcement Saturday.

Insigne would have the highest market value for an active player playing in MLS ever I think at least according to the dubiously reliable transfer market dot com. He's close to around the 150th most valuable player in the world (Though it really puts into perspective... highest market value ever... not even 150th). But now collectively the league is close to $1B in MV for players which puts it around 10th most valuable for total pool of players in the world. Helps of course to have more teams than any other league...

Insigne will be making more than the four highest-paid players in the history of MLS combined. Second-highest paid player after taxes under MLSE's umbrella after Siakam.

Rumour has it Laryea was guaranteed a starting spot on Forest as part of the deal (we shall soon see).

Theo Corbeanu has moved from Wednesday to MK Dons (on loan from Wolves)

In other news, all our top offensive players at this moment have Covid (Larin, David, Davies), better now than later I suppose. None serious AFAIK.

They key takeaway from the Laryea deal is now TFC can use the $1M they made in selling him and apply it to GAM. This makes signing international players easier...say, if they're the starting goalie for CMNT and are looking to leave their current club in Serbia...

Sheffield Wednesday have messed up in their handling of exciting exit-bound Wolves youngster Theo Corbeanu
“Running down the wing,” they sang. “Makes the Wednesday sing. He’s not going back to Wolves.”
Alex Miller thestar.co.uk January 6 2022

But it seems Theo Corbeanu is going back to Wolves, at least for a day or two, before heading back out on loan to one of Sheffield Wednesday’s closest promotion rivals.

It is a slap in the face for supporters who had taken him to their hearts. Wednesday have a proud history of players of his attacking outlook, of players who run at players with every opportunity and make things happen. Corbeanu was a long way short of the sort of names that spring to mind of course, but he was exciting, bold and full of intent.

Look, he wasn’t the figure some may have painted him to be. A comment on social media surmising that Wednesday have lost the best attacking player in League One is something of an overstatement. Corbeanu, more often than not in many matches, was as wasteful as he was exciting and made poor decisions.

Anyone who ever sat within earshot of Darren Moore and his staff during any of his appearances will know all too well the guidance he required positionally and defensively – it was at times guidance akin to babysitting particularly when Wednesday were under the pump.

The case in point came at Accrington Stanley where for all his fireworks in the first half, Wednesday only truly saw out the deserved win once the youngster was replaced with the more defence-savvy Jaden Brown. The home side had focused their attacks to run at Corbeanu, who seemed to have shrivelled from the footballing expertise of Maradona to Madonna as the game’s momentum changed course.

The thing is, though, that when channelling Diego – you’ll excuse the manic hyperbole – he was magic, the driving force behind a 20-minute display of attack-minded football that blew their usually dogged opposition to pieces. And it is that raw, undiluted attacking talent that Wednesday will surely miss.

It’s the chant, it’s the clattering sound of plastic seats that followed when he got the ball and it’s the hum of excitement whenever he rose to join the action from the bench. Wednesday fans sang Corbeanu’s song non-stop for the best part of half an hour at Crewe. Who else gets that?

Not many loanees can make the sort of impact Corbeanu achieved on a fanbase in such limited time and, some would argue, on such little consistency.

That he is on his way to a promotion rival in MK Dons is the ultimate raspberry at a time the club should be kicking on in their stuttering promotion effort, not having pins stuck in it.

Could they have done more to keep Wolves happy and ensure Corbeanu remained a Wednesday man? Of course. There is little doubt that for all the development of his lesser attributes, he was under-utilised and played out of position.

From a footballing point of view, Wednesday have lost a player that was more often than not encouraging rather than consistently breathtaking. We’ll never know what he and Wednesday could have achieved together in different circumstances.

Finding someone who can excite a fanbase in a similar way will be very, very hard work.

You can’t help but feel that Wednesday have messed up.

I love Richie's game. I will miss watching him. There are certain players in every sport where I just love the way the play the game and I pay closer attention to them during the game or highlights. Harry Kane for soccer is my #1 for that the last few years. On TFC, it's Lareya. The last player before that was Gio, though that was more because he's like that loveable little guy and I wanted to see him succeed. He was a tremendous player though. De Guzman as well, but pre-TFC days.

It's funny how in the last few years two high profile Italian players in their prime came to Toronto. Imagine saying that 15 years ago. Gio was the highest paid Italian player anywhere when he came over and same thing will happen now for Insigne. While Serie A was the pinnacle 15 years ago, it definitely is not anymore.

Gareth Wheeler had a twitter thread breaking down the (presumed) reasoning behind signing Insigne and others:

Quote:
Manning proposed 5-year plan for TFC to MLSE Board in September. Budget approved in November. Final details ironed out finalized in the new year with Insigne.

Plan was part of a commercial lay-out in the lead up to 2026 World Cup. This financial commitment is just part of the build leading into hosting in '26. Insigne will be a centre-piece. World Cup will be transformation in Toronto. And Manning wants #TFCLive to be a driving force.

Club has been working diligently on other moves. Expectation is more transactions are completed in the next few weeks and the squad will look very different to start the season. The plan is long-term, and the complete transformation will take some time.

Manning reiterates they are going to busy and more transactions are to come. Stresses a number of moving pieces are involved and there is potential interest in players.

It's clear Manning holds the Toronto Italian community in high-esteem for the brand. He was impressed seeing Italy at the EUROs. Searched what players were coming out of contract. Insigne landed atop his list.

https://twitter.com/GarethWheeler/st...47755937898496
For those who weren't in Toronto during the latest EUROs...Italians were driving around for hours honking horns and waving flags everywhere. I'm nowhere near Little Italy and they were doing it for hours.
