That's about 4 inches of water in that pool we didn't get THAT much rain.
I think it's a water proofing test.

A Hip WTC Mall Would be Cool, But Not as Cool as a Times Square Aquarium

By Matt Chaban
November 8, 2010

Quote:
The Times sat down with retail maven Robert K. Futterman yesterday to discuss his work in the city. He talked about the CKCKreliability of Soho and Fifth Avenue during the recession, that neither has seen a rent dip (our guess is all those foreign tourists), as well as two especially intriguing projects in his portfolio.

The first is the retail space at the World Trade Center, which Futterman said is in talks with "all the household names," something to be expected given the psuedo-mall's size (500,000 square feet), prominence and, of course, everyone's desire to be downtown.

There is also the little-known fact that, despite the aforementioned Fifth Avenue's strength, the old World Trade Center mall was actually the most high-traffic, profitable place in the city, before it was destroyed on 9/11, something that no doubt makes the new venture all the more appealing.

Yet here is what Futterman said that really caught The Observer's pink eye: "You'll probably have something hipper than any shopping mall, maybe a mix of local and international operators." That sounds exciting. Sort of a Soho II, maybe?

Meanwhile, Futterman confirms the aquarium talks for 11 Times Square, about the only thing better for the area than a throw-back peep show. Yet is also sounds like the building could be destined for more of the same pedestrian pablum.

We have 55,000 square feet on the ground, basement and second floor, but the retail could go up to the sixth floor. Most of the interest is from fast-fashion retailers like Forever 21, Urban Outfitters, Old Navy. Consumer electronics are also interested, and restaurants.

Given that Disney has just opened its Times Square dreamland, this sounds just about right.

That is the first section of a 200 foot long 1,500 ton Box Girder. It's going to hold up part of the plaza and Greenwich St.

Water Water Everywhere: WTC Reflecting Pools Filling Up as Site Springs a Leak

By Matt Chaban
November 8, 2010

Quote:
The weather has been miserable of late. When a Curbed tipster noticed water accumulating in the World Trade Center memorial, it follows that it could be taken for an oversized puddle. But according to a memorial spokesperson, the water is in fact testing of the reflecting pool's waterfalls, one of the signature features.

With barely 10 months before the 10th anniversary of 9/11, when the memorial is expected to finally open, looking at these pictures show there is a long way to go yet still not much left to do. Sure, the memorial will not be done-done by next September, but after all the in-fighting and hand-wringing over this project, each new milestone—like a couple dozen oak trees—is yet another reminder that the thing will finally get done.

Unless it all springs a leak, which kinda happened on Thursday. According to DNA Info, the retaining wall that holds back the Hudson—remember, they call it West Street for a reason—was having some technical difficulties, which allowed water from the river to seep into the construction site. The leak was contained by Friday morning, but Curbed noticed water still on the site yesterday.

Hopefully this is but a minor hiccup on the road to completion and not another rough patch come to unwind the entire redevelopment. There's been so much good news about the site of late, it's almost odd to hear about something going wrong.

Hudson River Wall Springs Leak Near World Trade Center

November 5, 2010

Quote:
A concrete wall that keeps the Hudson River at bay near the World Trade Center sprung a leak Thursday night.

The leak was noticed about 11 p.m. Thursday when 2 feet of water filled a construction pit near Vesey Street just west of West Street, said Steve Coleman, spokesman for the Port Authority.

The FDNY responded and contained the leak by about 1 a.m. Friday, Coleman said.

The water flowed through a small crack in a concrete retaining wall that was built to keep the Hudson River back during the excavation of a pedestrian tunnel beneath West Street, Coleman said. When the tunnel is complete, it will allow people to walk belowground between the World Financial Center and the World Trade Center.

Brookfield Properties, owner of the World Financial Center, is building the tunnel from the west side, while the Port Authority is building it from the east. The leak happened on the west side, an area under Brookfield’s control, Coleman said.

Because the tunnel does not yet go all the way through, there was no danger of the World Trade Center site flooding, Coleman said.

A spokesman for Brookfield Properties said the leak may have started because the grout the workers put in the wall did not fully seal it.

"It is my understanding that this is not all that unusual and a fairly minor issue," said the spokesman, Matthew Cherry, in an e-mail.

There were no injuries or traffic impacts, the Associated Press reported.

The Occupational Safety and Heath Administration may investigate the incident, Coleman said.

Yep, they're testing the waterfalls on the North Pool. Looks pretty cool on earthcam.

With the water running it really shows you why they went for two different shades of materials on the granite sides and concrete bottom; it's all blended together.

Great update! To me it the falls look kinda weak and transparent. The renderings made the falls look more profound, im a little disappointed...what do you think?

^ i have to second that.

from the pictures, it looked like the the falls were gonna be more powerful, and make a greater impact, rather then just run the side of the wall.
