Sorry for the diversion from building construction. I'll stop now.
Thank you, most enlightening.

I've never heard that expression either, but in Mexico there is something very similar (and very similar to the buses on Buford Hwy) that are known as collectevo's - and I probably butchered the spelling.

It's a great concept. They are very frequent, and very affordable.

Focus shifts to alternative site for new Falcons stadium (Atlanta Business Chronicle)

It looks like it'll be built right on Northside and Ivan Allen, where it belonged in the first place! The view from the large window will still be amazing!! So glad to hear this!!

^They haven't chosen a site yet. South site is by far the best option, as the North site doesn't have transit access. Better yet, don't build a new billion dollar plus stadium when the one we have now is great and will still be good for at least 3 decades.

They're choosing a site today, according to the article. The deadline is August 1.

Yet.

Interesting you think an animated gif somehow constitutes an informed position. Also interesting you think there's magically going to be a rail line to the north site within 4 years.

The south site is by far the superior one, for multiple reasons that have been mentioned countless times.

To think that the unbridled greed of one church could force this is pretty sad, imo.

Even if there was magically rail to the north side in 4 years, it would probably be light rail. The two existing Marta station and proximity to the CNN Center, GWCC and Centennial Park venues is what makes the south site far superior. The city sees it, and most people on this board see it.

Zanarkand posted on city data that "I can't wait to drive down Ivan Allen and see the new Birds' Nest high on that hill!" That's not the vision I want for the stadium. Clearly an auto-oriented view and disconnected from the attractions around the south site and transit.

shivtim, I always respect and enjoy your posts and contributions. But totally disagree with you on this. If Atlanta (Falcons) are going to be competitive and possibly attract another Super Bowl, this is definitely the point that is being discussed.

Yep. Here's the crowds in the Dome MARTA Station after last weekend's Gold Cup game. Note the 8-car train on the left is already full to capacity and about to leave. That's over 1000 people in the train.

The next train was equally packed:

I understand the need to have a great stadium that can compete with other cities. But the dome is only 20 years old and just had a $300 million renovation 5 years ago. It currently hosts world-class events - the NCAA final four, one of the biggest FBS bowl games (chick-fil-A bowl), an NFL team, an FBS team (GSU), the Gold Cup, SEC basketball and football championships, Wrestlemania, and on and on. It was included in the US's bid for the 2022 world cup. Does anyone really think this stadium will be obsolete 4 years from now? Is it worth spending over a billion dollars to maybe get one superbowl? We should be aiming to have a new stadium around 2035 or later.

Sorry, not trying to get off-topic in the construction thread, I just really don't get the support for public funding for a new stadium, other than wanting a shiny piece of new architecture. Anyway, it's great that everyone can have their own opinions on this. If we happen to disagree, no worries!

Agree to some extent, but 2035 are ya kidding, most people on this board will be dead, and I am sure you will be an old man by then as well.

Work continues on Krog Street Market:

One12 Courtland's first move-in date is August 15th. All of the apartments are rented out - 290 people are moving in.

I don't think this video about Ga Tech's under-construction Engineered Biosystems Building has been posted yet:

Don't worry, if we stick to the current schedule, there will be yet another new stadium under construction by then! 1992, 2017, 2042.

I'd respectfully beg to differ on at least two fronts. Firstly, it is with very little doubt not great from an NFL/business perspective. Secondly, and admittedly altogether subjective (as it sounds like the initial assertion was), I personally don't find it all that great from a spectator perspective. Frankly (and I know I'm not alone, which is part of what feeds into the first point) I more often than not don't go to games because of the current stadium. I would, however, most likely attend at least 2+ more games each year. And know that many local companies would also capitalize on the opportunity to spend $$ for private outings given more hospitality options.

Of course, many arguments to be made on both sides re: funding and whatnot. But again, just tossing around opinions, I'm not sure I'd even rank it in the top 90% of current NFL stadiums based on most criteria, though it is in the top 30% in terms of typical seating capacity, which I suppose is something.

I like my car...I don't need it, but I do like it. It's more convenient than public transit by a very long shot and I can use transit when I choose. I think there are many people in Atlanta like me - and it's not an evil existence like some people seem to think. Not calling any names or anything.

on a related note...I think it's easy to forget that there are demographics for which living in an optimal location or jumping through some of the various other hoops isn't much of an option. Of course, it would seem there just might not be a plethora of options any way you slice it...

I'm anything but auto-oriented, although I'm sure you realize that some people do drive to games. In my post, I meant driving down Ivan Allen on non-game days, which I do regularly. I take MARTA to games now, and have no problem walking from Civic Center or Vine City in 2017. As far as attractions, the north site is a few blocks from Pemberton Place, the Aquarium, the World of Coke, the Center for Civil and Human Rights, and all the new developments being built near the north site. Nope, no attractions there

Interesting that you think the Dome will be viable in 3 years, much less 30. And by viable, I mean able to attract top events or even keep the events it currently hosts.

As far as the gif: lighten up, princess.
