I think Instagram and the like took the wind out of the sails of these threads. While there was progress in terms of making it easier to contribute and share photos, something was lost.
Even today the typical resolution or quality on Instagram and other casual social media sites is not very good, and phone camera optics are not the same as a real camera.
There's also something different about a focused photo thread with a story covering a specific area or theme vs. the same landmark shots over and over with different filters. I find we have really lost good neighbourhood photography.
Streetview doesn't fill the gap either. A lot of finer-grained stuff is not on streetview and it's a single snapshot from when the Google car passed through. It may accidentally capture some good street scenes but it's not like a deliberate, creative photographer.
