Since the sidewalks in Vancouver don't even get plowed in the rare event of snow I think heated sidewalks would be the most monumental waste of money of all time.

Maintenance would be a nightmare too.

It's true that it would only be useful for a few days per year in Vancouver. Mostly it would be interesting to see some kind of study on what technologies can be used, how much it costs to build and maintain, and how much the environmental conditions affect the cost.

I bet it would cost a lot to tear up a street to install it but you could avoid that cost by bundling it with underground infrastructure renewal and streetscaping.

^the Montreal aerial pic posted earlier suggests a heck of a lot of work needs doing to really earn its oft ranking as #2 or #3 skyline in the country.

But all opinions/preferences are valid of course.

90% of the massive number of MTL pics in this thread are really great (and I am a registered fanboy of most aspects of this great city), but confess my weary scrolling hand may have triggered a less than positive comment ;-)

Apologies.

Nonetheless, the arial shot doesn't really characterize a dense/tall skyline imo.

If 1 post has more than 5-6 photos it gets unwieldly. Putting too many in one post defeats the purpose. It's like putting 100 paintings in one room at a gallery instead of 6. You don't know what to focus on so you just go to the next room.

Agreed, which is why I tend to prefer the "Your City, a Few Photos at a Time" thread. It's less overwhelming with a limit of 4-5 photos per post, so I'm more likely to properly process everything.

I kind of wish for the days when there were more epic threads in the "your city photos" section. Montreal was one of the stars there. Kilgore was my favourite at the time but I remember several really great artists including Segun, Malek, harls, and gatt. Mr John had some pretty epic content as well, but sometimes I bit dark for my delicate sensibilities.

^ And any photo-sharing site. My City Photos was a unique, personal look in to a city, but now you can find that kind of content online easily. Speaking for myself, I'd rather post my photos on social media. It doesn't take as long, and you reach way more people.

My City Photos is a dinosaur.

I think Instagram and the like took the wind out of the sails of these threads. While there was progress in terms of making it easier to contribute and share photos, something was lost.

Even today the typical resolution or quality on Instagram and other casual social media sites is not very good, and phone camera optics are not the same as a real camera.

There's also something different about a focused photo thread with a story covering a specific area or theme vs. the same landmark shots over and over with different filters. I find we have really lost good neighbourhood photography.

Streetview doesn't fill the gap either. A lot of finer-grained stuff is not on streetview and it's a single snapshot from when the Google car passed through. It may accidentally capture some good street scenes but it's not like a deliberate, creative photographer.
