The owner of that land originally wanted to put 4-5 food trucks there but the city wouldn't let him do that.

Hopefully the new City Council will be more open to the idea. Watching Food Network and seeing those Food Truck hubs in cities across the US and Canada, makes me hope we can see something similar here. And that spot next to the Tannery is about as perfect as you can make it.

What's especially exasperating about this situation is that Downtown Fredericton Inc. complained on behalf of their members, saying it would hurt restaurants. That may be true but that's how the free market works. And downtown has very few "quick service" options for people who don't have the luxury of having a longer lunch. Food trucks fill that void in the market IMO.

Yup agree 100%. I only have 30 mins for my lunch so it has to be something

Looking good overall. The Main Street addition seems to match the plan (even though it's technically outside of the plan's scope IIRC; that intersection is where they want to set up a "Main Street Gateway"). And a big improvement over that little white house that used to be there.

The Aberdeen location; I guess that's where the WInners sports lounge is going to end up. I can't imagine them really wanting to stay on the NBEX grounds after that stunt; especially since actual horse racing seems to have disappeared from the city.

It's good to see more and more mixed Commercial/Residential development coming along Brunswick street. It seems like a good way to have the Downtown expand, without having to kick everyone out all at once.

I live near the race track and it's quiet 98% of the year and busy around the FREX. You can see racers training throughout the day most days. The racetrack may be an important cultural feature for the city, but it's a dying sport within the city itself. I say it's time to repurpose the FREX grounds into something better

Also notice there's an extended turning lane on Arnold Drive going west in anticipation of increased traffic volumes.

If the current store ends up relocating to the former Target space, what's the likelihood that it will become a Sobeys Extra location like the one that is proposed in Moncton for the Main & Vaughan Harvey location?

City Hall
There hasn't been much talk on this forum about the change of administration in the mayor's office. What impact,if any, do you guys see on how business is done and what the city chooses to prioritize? How will it impact commercial or residential development especially affordable housing and shelters for at-risk people? Will it mean more trailer parks? What impact will it have on the proposed new Playhouse?

Starbucks
Don't understand why Starbucks doesn't have a store open in downtown yet.Given that most of their city centre locations are storefront businesses and not drive thrus,it shouldn't have been too hard to find a spot.Plenty of vacancies downtown. If they need another drive thru location, they can build a store in the parking lot of the Regent St Sobeys.

That's really off topic.

They have not hidden the fact that they wanted to open at the corner of King and Regent where the old bus station was. Job listings are also open on the Starbucks website for that location. I think it's just a question of someone investing and finishing the interior building. Rumours were that they wanted a drive thru at that location and the city denied them because of the problems at the Tim Horton's accros the street from them. I think someone will just have to bite the bullet and realize that most Starbucks downtown locations don't have drive thru's.

City Motel Update.....

The conversion plans to turn the hotel into an assisted living facility are dead...according to the local news. According to the local news the building has been sold to a new group who will be keeping it as a hotel. They will be undertaking renovations and will be re branding the facility over the next several months. The restaurant aka Lobster Hut will undergo changes as they seek an operator for that part of the facility

Damn, that's really disappointing.

On the one hand, it's good that corner stays commercial I guess. But the assisted living facility plans looked great; it would have really spruced up the look of the corner.

Agreed...But gotta figure that the former proponent is looking for other options so may end up building somewhere else in the city.
