Yeah - I kind of love that after we joined Canada, they got embarrassed by the fact Gander was literally the only scrap of Canada the vast majority of American and European travelers ever saw. So Canada built that fancy airport, with all of the top names of the time - everything in it, even the ashtrays (since removed for obvious reasons) are worth a Vogue article. I don't follow style that closely, but if you do at all, you will recognize the name who designed every single thing in it - from the chairs to the lighting. For a few decades, it was almost certainly the finest terminal in the country.

It was a fun time for Newfoundlanders too. You could phone your agent in St. John's and book a flight on basically any airline, anywhere in the world. Take the coach to Gander, and off you went direct.

Portland and King. The place in the pic was Portland Variety - the owner railed against the King streetcar pilot but continued well after it was instituted before closing. It was mediocre IMO.

April 13 in South Vancouver down by the river, not sure what they call this area, it is very random. Nice walking trails, parks etc. To the east is the new River District, which will extend the trails along the river to the east. A mix of condos, apartments, coop housing and SFH. Its like a hidden gem for those lucky to live there.

feels a lot like New West and its riverfront condos.

they closed the street off with a little park, too many vehicles used to speed through as it was a good alternative to the Marine Drive Traffic.

There are still trains that use the CP track through Fraserlands, but not often. Up until about 15 years ago, the CP yard on Kent in South Van was still decently active. Back when the rail bridge to Richmond beside the Oak St. Bridge was still active, this yard got some traffic to Univar just on the other side of the river. The yard also served the Arbutus trackage to Molson. I am not sure what rail customers are left in the area, but I have seen CP locomotives cross when I've walked around the area, as recently as a few months ago. Maybe they are just using it for storage for locomtoives, but it still gets traffic from them.

I love that you took these pics, it's actually such an odd little corner of the City but I like it. There's a fair bit of density even in the 90s section, so with Fraserlands booming right beside, the area is in the spotlight again. I need to wake a walk down there and explore soon, it is one of the few areas of the City proper that is seeing a really wide-scale redevelopment. It used to be Concord that always had new build clusters, then OV, but now River District is the only place to really see large vacant tracts being actively turned into a new neighbourhood (until NE False Creek starts, then that would be similar but on a smaller scale)

I don't really know more than the odd celebrity name in the worlds of art and design but it is a very striking space that integrates 20th century art, architecture, and furniture remarkably well. I hope this is safe from ever being demolished or substantially altered.
