Brilliant Pictures. The Marriott will be a great addition..especially since so many other developers are watching to see how well new hotels do in the area.

They've started pouring concrete for 888 Olive. Wonder when we'll see a crane go in.

The Flower Street of Avant is now working on it's 6th floor. The Figueroa side is only three floors up.

That's unexpected, at least to me. I thought that proj was still x number of days or even wks away from reaching that point. it's a nice change of pace when improvements move faster than originally assumed. Or the opposite of something like the glacial speed of the clark hotel proj.

that's another unexpected bit of news. I thought work had begun on the Fig side of that apt proj before the section facing Flower was underway. Or cuz the Fig side is the more presentable entry to such a new bldg, I assumed the devlpr wanted that side to be completed before the other side.

I came across these brief vids of the avant bldg, & what stands out to me is how the proj's footprint is rather small, surrounded on all sides by parking lots & tired old bldgs.

Not as small as when the city lights on Fig apt bldg was completed about 10 yrs ago, on a site almost next door to avant. City lights stood all alone, all by itself.....& not a big proj in its own right....only 100 apt units. I'm sure the ppl in that apt bldg welcome the new neighbors. However, to make that part of dt really start to come alive will require many more new projs, back to back, side by side....

tricalconstruction.com

^ when this bldg filled up rather quickly, that was another reason why I began to think dt had more demand for housing than previously estimated. the bldg's website currently shows about 13 vacant apts out of 100. btw, the brockman lofts bldg at 7th & grand ave now shows 4 units remain available for lease.

your helping keep this thread alive goes without saying.

I've just watched this vid of a couple taking the red line. It makes me wish so much that the subway extension to west LA were already under construction, if not already open & ready for passengers.

It's too bad the vid falls apart after the couple apparently shopped at target at 7th/fig, but it reminds me of all the great potential that dt will have when it becomes very convenient to reach from areas west of vermont, or fairfax, or bev hills, or around westwood, & not just hollywood & north hollywood.

throw in the dt regional connector, & the construction of the expo line to at least Samo, & ppl being able to finally enjoy other things in LA that are taken for granted elsewhere, & things are getting very interesting....

The last call for drinks is 2 a.m. in California, but one lawmaker believes that's just too early to set down the shot glasses and beer steins. State Sen. Mark Leno's proposal to let the liquor flow until 4 a.m. as a way to draw more tourists – and with them more revenue and jobs – is already spawning a sharp debate from Sacramento to watering holes in San Francisco and Los Angeles.

Leno said the measure would make the state more competitive with other hotspots like New York, Las Vegas and Miami that serve alcohol later into the wee hours of the morning or 24 hours a day.

In Los Angeles, there is a buzz about a later last call, said Barbara Jacobs, chief operating officer at a 1920's-themed downtown nightspot, The Edison. She said the bar is making plans for a midnight breakfast and cocktail menu in case the proposal passes. "We're creatively driven and so we're going to take advantage of it," she said.

Industry groups such as the California Restaurant Association and the Hollywood Hospitality Coalition are endorsing the 4 a.m. last call.

Los Angeles hosted a record 41.4 million visitors last year, one million more than in 2011. And, the city said, guests spent more than $16 billion in 2012. The San Francisco Travel Association said the city drew 16.5 million tourists who spent nearly $9 billion in 2012, up from the previous year.

Blogdowntown has created an interactive online map of DTLA projects, including new buildings, restaurants/nightlife, and transportation projects.

Wow, Alamo Draft House/Movie theatre looks to be coming to the Historic Core. Another parking lot to bite the dust!

Wow, that will be great. I guess this is going in that bizarre courtyard in the back? I really hope this theater will not be a simply mainstream theater, of which there are plenty of options. We really need an independent theater/chain like Laemmle or Landmark. The Downtown Independent isn't consistent enough in its schedule.

Actually it seems like the theater would replace the parking lot just to the north of the Medallion courtyard (which I think is pretty cool, but sadly underutilized due to its location). 18 months seems like a ridiculously optimistic completion date but I hope it works out sooner than later. The 300 block of Main is a crucial piece to link together the Historic Core, Civic Center and Little Tokyo.

If I'm allowed to dream big, I'd love to see a downtown Arclight one of these days...

Totally called it. Weird, though, that they are building a new structure instead of restoring an old theater, but whatever. Hope the design is nice.

Nice! I find it funny when I see people from LA complaining about all the parking lots, apparently none of you have ever seen the tragedy that is Houston.

Oh right, I saw that shot on the site where he's pointing up the hill. That's even better. I too like that courtyard, but those retail spaces around it are sooo tiny. I'm not sure they're useful. And I totally agree about connecting northward. This will be huge.

I'd take an Arclight for sure, but still would prefer a chain that shows mostly independent or at least a healthy mix. We have LA Live for all the huge commercial films.

What is funny about us complaining about parking lots, something destructive and wholly incompatible with the functional, urban atmosphere and environment we desire? And why should we have had to "seen Houston" in order to feel that way?

Entitled land in DT LA is very sought after right now, so hopefully its a developer who is ready to build asap

Is that at 11th and Grand?

If I recall correctly, that site was entitled for 23 floors. Hopefully the buyer isn't looking to scale down the project.

Haha, calm down I wasnt trying to pick a fight. I'm just saying you guys have a million times more infill than we do here. Holy freaking crap Houston is pathetic when it comes to density. Look at our downtown its 75% parking lot. But yeah, I know that feel all too well.

Well, I've been lurking for years, from around the time that The Watermarke was under construction in the 3.0, and recently I've just been so excited about everything happening that I feel I should post. The DTLA project rundowns have been some of the most valuable things I've ever had the pleasure to come across on the internet, they were what truly sparked my interest in DTLA and enabled me to appreciate what is going on and what Downtown really is. I guess I just want to thank everyone for keeping me entertained, interested and educated on what's going on downtown.

It's like a dream that all sorts of great things are finally happening in Downtown and across LA in general. For me it's still sinking in that Downtown is getting a new supertall(to me it is a supertall anyway, even with the antenna spire deal), I think it's really going to send the skyline over the edge and enable it to gain the respect it deserves in the eyes of many. I feel like LA in general is undergoing a renaissance of sorts, people are waking up, they're appreciating both the old and the new. All sorts of new highrises, a supertall, the streetcar, a fitting neighbor for the concert hall, restaurants, shops, it's just amazing watching it change. Every time I visit something gets a bit better, something grows and I meet some new person who is just friendly and down to earth. I remember just around a 2 years ago nothing was happening at all, we would all get excited if a restaurant was opening or something like that. Now construction is everywhere. Anyone interested in LA needs to be aware of this thread's existence, and im sure there are literally hundreds of people lurking it every day. I probably won't post often because your guys discussions tend to get a bit esoteric for me, although sometimes I am just really excited about something getting built. I will try to post photo updates when I do head downtown and things like that. I love walking around downtown, it's therapeutic, although the streetcar is going to be nice. See you guys around. Keep being awesome. Even you Citywatch.

Welcome to the forum, Spantik!

I agree with Muji that a multi-screen theater really under-utilizes that space. It really should be a multiplex with a 20-30 story residential tower on top. The lot can easily accommodate that, even from a zoning perspective. But the theater is certainly great news and will activate that corner, and really tie the blocks to the north (where I live, and shamelessly promote) to the historic core. Now, if only we can see this development momentum start to make it's way west to 3rd and Spring, and eventually to some of the surface lots on Broadway between 2nd and 3rd.

And I'm very interested to see if the old Glass Tower project can move forward as rentals (with a condo map to turn condo when the market allows). I'd love to see that original design (or at least the latest one) move forward.
