Northrup said yesterday that it will be announced in the "coming weeks" which is a pretty standard, non-committal, reply. They wanted to get this highway exit announcement out of the way, then finalise the deals with the retailers (who were wanting the highway deal), and then we'll hear the Phase 2 details.

Sorry I can't offer much more than that.

Geez, if a few over-priced, over-hyped retailers can make a city, why didn't we lure them years ago? This is some kind of small town bickering going on here...

I think saying moncton should be banned from this thread for whatever reason whenever moncton is mentioned its a schoolyard fight here.

Lets just call it to the city north of us

Any takers lol???

That report does seem kind of biased thought being a peterborough based report it's more of how much of the population spends more money and not where the most money is spent, The report is also from 2006. Especially since toronto, vancouver, and winnipeg so long I will gurantee you more money is made there then most of the places on the top except edmonton due to that mall they have out there.

I trust that report more than a mysterious "retail magazine report" at least I can see this one lol! 2006 is not that long ago, trends like that dont change overnight. This study is on a PER CAPITA basis thats why toronto isnt on the top of the list.

Well I hope I can put more trust in my mayor than that. I mean I dont believe he would quote something that is not credible. PLus that article said shopping destination not where money is spent. EIther way statistics and percentages can me made to say whatever you want just have to take them in the way that will benefit you most.

The numbers I would like to see is the amount of money spent in each city on retail. Both cities have similar populations so the real number is which place takes in more money in retail.

Well regardless...this one unnamed magazine report goes against every other survey Ive ever seen and it also goes against common sence, Moncton has a larger economic region population than SJ. We are also on the TCH, have the busiest airport in the province by far, are on the VIA rail line, and our hotel occupancy rate is the highest in atlantic canada according the most recent survey. These, among many other factors including (as previously listed) more than 50 national chain stores which SJ is without lead me to believe this is not true.

Why are you dragging Fredericton into the Saint John-Moncton debate?

Once Again I do not have a problem with the city to the northeast of us. I was just quoting our mayor. Either way Both cities are good for New Brunswicks economy. Both have pros and cons and you being from moncton and me bing from SAint john gives us both a biast for our respective city. I take no wins or loses for either city for each is unique and each have there own chosen direction as a city economically.

I am wondering how the proposed ward system will impact development in the city.

I am concerned that this could fracture efforts to concentrate retail and could also slow water front development if councilors are concerned with pork barreling to get reelected.

I am not sure entirely how the ward system will work but in regards I would think that individuals would have less pull than a group effort to get things done. Politicians would be more inclined to make the people happy and not neccesarily promote growth. I think with that you would see alot more of "dont build that there"and "dont do this because we dont want because it will lower our property value" and overrall hurt our city. Groups of the city who are outspoken basically get there own lawyer for the government and it seems that most of the time their not going to do whats best economically.

Reported on www.news889.com today

"Y" to come down within weeks

SAINT JOHN, NB - The skyline of the city's uptown will soon change.

The province's Supply and Services Minister, Roly McIntyre, tells us the province will have the old Y-M-C-A building demolished within six to eight weeks, to make room for the new 75 million dollar justice complex.

"That will be the biggest single signal so far that we are starting to move forward." McIntyre said.

Ribbed for his slip of the tounge earlier this week, after saying the Premier was in town announcing forty-five million dollars for the complex, McIntyre says the province isn't quite at the announcement stage.

He says the province is still working to secure the finances to move forward on the project and is confident it will begin early next year.
