I actually love these. They look to have a nicer design than any townhomes I've seen in Rittenhouse or Grad Ho.

They are not getting rid of the building, but refurbing it and making an overbuild. However, it does look as if the days are numbered for the whales. The top floor cladding above the whales has already been removed.

Seriously though my friends and I all love the weirdness of those whales, and we're genuinely disappointed to see them go. Maybe it's because we're all originally from the suburbs, but that building has always been a landmark to us.

Completely agree. I'm sad to see that mural go, although I'm very happy for the development coming, those whales were a landmark.

The fact that they made no sense made them stick out even more. I'm joked before that if they wanted it to be more representative of life in the Schuylkill they could have trash bags floating like jelly fish and beer bottles turned to coral and so on.

Still, for the city's overall image, a major company HQ is probably a better landmark to drive by than any mural ever could be.

The guy who painted the whales, Robert Wyland, did 100 of them around the US and a few other countries, starting in the 80's and ending in 2008. Philly got this one in 1993.

Great! I'm hoping that this development will jumpstart private investment in that area. Although the surrounding area is pretty poor and far-off from Center City, Broad and Erie has a lot going for it: continuous density between Broad, Germantown, and Erie; local, express, Ridge-Spur, and Sports Specials under Broad Street; infrastructure in place for the restoration of the 56 as a trolley; landmark eateries, such as Max's; and, Temple University Hospital, along with a professional student population. As a student at Temple, I'll often take a northbound BSL and eat lunch in that area. I have never once felt unsafe walking through that area or Nicetown/Tioga. This is one area of North Philly that I can see making a comeback, and I hope the Beury Building can make that happen.

The last major symbol of blight along Broad Street would be the Packard Building on Broad and Lehigh if the Beury Building can undergo restoration!

you see lots of Temple med and dental students around Broad and Erie and Broad and Allegheny. There is a ZBA hearing soon for a apt building at 15th and Allegheny- presumably to cater to these students. There is now a starbucks in first floor of one of Temple's buildings near Broad and Tioga. This building is likely the second largest vacant structure on North Broad after the Botany 500 factory at Lehigh.

So the topic of the Architect Erdy McHenry came up, and I saw the profile for a lowrise development he designed in the Navy yard called "AXALTA." It said that the development would be completed in September of 2017. I haven't heard of this at all, and was wondering if anyone else has.

When I Googled the client name, this was the top hit. Looks like it should be under construction now.
