Grocery store, theatre, pharmacy, casino, community rink, off the top of my head. All things that will pull people to rogers place on non game nights. Did I mention the winter garden which in itself is suppose to be able to hold small events. I think they did a spectacular job on that aspect of the new arena

^ MTS Centre did a reasonably good job of trying to integrate itself with the urban fabric... there's a Jets Gear store, a Moxie's Restaurant and until this year, a Tim Hortons and Subway franchises (they actually turned part of the concourse into restaurant space during the day), along with being part of the skywalk system.
On one hand I wonder why OSEG didn't try doing something like that, but then again, 104 Av has a bit of a stroad thing going on and it's not really a street that gets high volumes of pedestrians.
Yeah why didn't Ottawa sports and entertainment group make these things happen for edmontons new arena lol
To be fair pre 2010ish the idea was to get people into the games and out of the parking lot asap. LA and Toronto were really the pioneers of trying to keep peoples pockets books open as long and often as possible. Now look at the craze of these LA live type areas in the NHL/NBA

Please tell me they are not going to have both teams on the same sideline.
From the photos, it appears that the lines marking the team areas are shown on each side of the field, from the 40 to the 40, indicating the "traditional" layout of teams on opposite sides.
Do people actually understand that the plaza and developments around the arena in Edmonton are designed to bring people to the space? So while the arena itself may be inward facing, the development as a whole will interact with the surrounding urban fabric and will vastly improve street life as an overall whole. The Winter Garden itself will also be open to the public and hosting events as well, which was noted.
Smugly and condescendingly talking down about the arena, criticizing its architecture and mocking those who disagree as being distracted by the novelty of a shiny object is pretty funny when other components of the development that are part and parcel are barely under construction. The arena itself though, I wonder what exactly would have silenced the minority of vocal critics who seem to want to really make it known that they really don't like it.

That's the arena district though. Fair point about the Winter Garden although we will see how much use it gets. I am referring to the outer wall of the arena. Apparently Detroit will have retail businesses ringing the outer wall of their new arena with entrances open to the public from the sidewalk/street. Rogers Place looks like it will have nothing like that - just a blank wall with entrances to the arena and practice facility.

No the casino is directly connected to the arena. There will be restaurants and pubs open in the winter garden.

Something i'll never understand is why they decided to go with such skimpy upper decks yet doubled up on the endzone seating on 1 end. It's a great stadium but I, again maintain my stance that IGF should be looked at as NMS's equal rather than second best. I actually like it better. My hope is that Calgary takes the best parts of these stadiums and makes a hybrid superior to both. Seriously beautiful work of art they have in Regina but as a bombers fan I feel very little stadium envy. (please spare me the lecture of how many more elevators it has)
all I can say is I'm honestly overwhelmed and impressed with this league's/countries stadium frenzy over the past 6 years
My hope is Montreal does a well needed reno/update and Calgary either breaks ground or guts McMahon and does something special within 3 years

Aww, no love for McMahon what with it's pretty much open to the elements concession stands in many areas, it's lovely bathrooms, etc, etc. One needs to spend some time behind the scenes in this stadium to really truly appreciate it's greatness, I jest. Maybe not?
