I know those are just concept designs, but they're gorgeous. I also really like the idea of a plaza. I could see a plaza like that becoming a food truck spot.

Or the plaza could actually be the neighbor's property. If they did assemble the properties facing 6th, the building should come up to the corner. If they want to have a plaza, it should be along the creek to allow for the tree canopy and provide some breathing room for them at the top of the bank.

I come in to downtown on 5th street from Mopac, and see this thing on the reg. And it's going to be beautiful. It's got some stellar interaction with the creek and trees that line it, but it doesn't overwhelm the street, which in this spot I'm actually thankful for. Really great addition to west 5th, and preps you for the stunning mediocrity that's going to be the Horizon Bank building.

I agree, this is a really cool building. I like the curves - it's a nice break of the boxes throughout downtown.

Downtown co-living project gets Planning Commission support

Shoal Cycle, a 70-unit co-living project planned for 812 W. 11th St., went to the Planning Commission Tuesday to seek Downtown Mixed-Use (DMU-CO) zoning with a conditional overlay bumping the allowable building height to 90 feet.

As a co-living project, Shoal Cycle will rent out bedrooms, not full units. All units have three bedrooms and two bathrooms, in addition to a kitchen and living room, and tenants share the rest of their unit with up to two roommates.

In a rarity for rezoning cases in Austin, no neighbors opposed the project, likely because of the project’s downtown location and the lack of nearby single-family homes. In fact, several neighbors wrote and spoke in favor of the project, saying it will liven up a neighborhood that right now consists mostly of law offices operating out of historic houses.

Not sure the best place to post this, but this is kinda cool - I hadn't seen it yet, at least (or don't recall if I had). A friend forwarded me this link about a new sound art installation at Blanton. This would be right at the top of Capitol Mall on MLK.

Excited to see how the vote goes at Council. One would have hoped that once planning and zoning got rolled into the same department as housing their recommendations would improve seeing as how we're coming up short on pretty much all of our housing goals. Sadly that's not the case here, staff recommended 60' not the requested 90'. In a city as desperate for housing as ours is, do we really need to allow so many excuses to stop units from being built?

AUSTIN (Austin Business Journal) — Plans to build 10 luxury condominiums at the former home of HOPE Outdoor Gallery are moving forward, as the project’s developer broke ground April 8 on The Colorfield at 1012 Baylor St.

Cumby Group said the condo project’s name and design are meant to invoke the former outdoor art gallery and graffiti park. The Colorfield will also have a permanent mural wall. The entry-level asking price for units is $3.6 million.

Huge homes. "The neighborhood" fought for the limited unit count bc "traffic" which has the affect of elarging the remaining units. Spread the fixed costs of this amazing site amongst 10X the homes and delivering smaller units--better for all involved. NIMBYism is expensive!
