StatCan link shows the standardized process. Edmonton is simply larger and including "Oliver" etc. met the criteria. Its StatCan that determine what is a downtown geographic area. When The Parks and The Peak finish, that should bump up densities to roughly 5,250 per km^2.

Oliver and Vancouver's West End which are not included in the downtown area are more interesting with a density of 11,125 and 23,838 per km^2 respectively.

Oliver is part of Edmonton Downtown according to Statscan and Vancouvers Westend is included as part of Vancouver Downtown as per StatsCan reporting in the link at the bottom of my post I had provided. Here is the Edmonton map.

That StatsCan map of 'Downtown Edmonton' does miss about 10 blocks of Oliver's western end, between 121 and 124 Streets and south of Jasper Ave to 104 Ave/Stony Plain Road. There is quite a bit of residential density in that chunk that was not counted.

You are right - I had not noticed that. I wonder why that was sliced off at 121st.? Is everything west until groat road and south of 104th Oliver?

Not sure how these boundaries were defined, but just like about any stat about urban density, take it with a grain of salt, especially when comparing to another city with another random boundaries set. Who cares just how packed a place is after a certain threshold? I'd be more focused on how is the urban environment? The street level? How walkable is it? etc. I know I'm on a skyscraper forum, and skyscrapers are cool and all, but there's a balance for sure and too many people crammed into one area just isn't always so hot.

100%, walkability and overall comfort in an urban environment is really the thing that matters most for people living in a city. You can have tons of high rise apartments crammed together but if they are sterile, harsh environments surrounded by car sewers it won't be that great of a place to live (in my mind). Density is great if it spurs comparable density of amenities, places to explore, services, etc.

I like that tool. Unfortunately only net 2788 extra units over 4 years between Oliver and Downtown combined just doesn't seem like a great success but it is progress no doubt.

Stopped by this morning and it was quite busy. They have a great selection of all of the essentials and then some, but just not tons of each considering it's not a massive store. Prices are on the higher side akin to all CityMarkets.

Good to hear and expected.

It's such a key piece to the puzzle, but now it needs workers and a few hundred new residential units to be built within a couple of blocks.
