Next question. If you travel I-94 through Minnesota and North Dakota, and were coming from Toronto, would you travel south of Lake Michigan and just follow I-94 from Michigan (detroit), or would you head north up I-75 in Michigan and travel across on Michigan's Upper Peninsula on US-2 or something like that until you hit I-94 somewhere in Minnesota?

Also, don't forget that Loring AFB used to be up by Presque Ile and they used to fly nuclear armed B-52's out of there. The terminus of the I-95 at Houlton is not too far from Presque Ile.
The American Interstate system would be a better replication of the Autobahn if it had no restriction on speeds in some places, it takes too long to drive through Maine as it is. I understand your point though, it's all for military mobility.

Makes sense though, I suppose. I think i'd be in fantasy land if the Americans twinned the Maine 9 and tied it into Route 1 in New Brunswick. I'm sure all of the people in southern NB that drive to Bangor for random sales would appreciate. The Route 1 Project twinning is probably going to take 10-15 minutes off of the hour drive from Saint John to the border

I was coming back from Toronto and I crossed over to the States in the Sault...probably not the fastest, but I was being a tourist. I went through Osh Kosh, Madison, and hit the interstate somewhere near Wisconson Dells.

Google maps is telling me the route south of Lake Michigan through Chicago is the shortest way from TO to the twin cities.

Highway 11-17 will be four-laned between Eldorado Beach Road and Pass Lake. With this announcement, the entire stretch of highway 11-17 running parallel to Thunder Bay (the bay) will be four lanes, most of it divided.

That will leave about 65 km. Things may go a bit more slowly now, as the traffic counts aren't quite as high past the current commitment.

About 15km will be twinned from Nipigon River to just pass Red Rock, so there is a ~50km gap between the two. I think there are one or two four laning projects on that gap as well. There are actually so many four laning projects going on with this stretch (5 or 6 now) that I can't keep track.

One of the Highway 11/17 projects is a by-pass, the highway will run on a new right of way to by-pass the portion that has been too built up, which will become an extension of Lakeshore Drive.

It is in planning and won't be built for at least 30 years, but Highway 11/17 between Thunder Bay and Shabaqua will be re-routed entirely, by-passing Kakabeka Falls and other built up areas.

I think that once the road is twinned between TB and Nipigon, the focus should be on bypassing small towns, and twinning in the eastern part of the province, down the valley to Petawawa, and between Sault Ste. Marie and North Bay.

I always thought it was odd that the Windsor-Essex Parkway isn't mentioned much in this thread considering it is one of, if not the largest 1 time highway project in Ontario's history and that instead it's tucked away in this thread.

http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/showthread.php?t=188722

Either way, for the highway geeks it's definately a big project and it's beginning to ramp up.

plenty of photos can be found here at their Flickr page.

I'm definitely looking forward to seeing the finished product. It's a pretty innovative approach to an urban highway.

I am pretty interested in the Windsor-Essex Parkway project as well. I made the trek down to Windsor in October to photograph the existing highway before major construction was really underway. I plan on making yearly or so treks to try and highlight the construction progress from similar vantage points. It's probably not really necessary for me to do this, given how good a job of photographing the highway the contractors are doing through their flickr page, but it's kind of a fun little project for someone who digs highway construction as much as I do.

Highway 8 lane doubling in Kitchener.

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ontario_Highway_8

When this phase is complete, Highway 8 will go from 4 to 8 lanes all the way from the Conestoga Parkway to Highway 401.

The next phase of the project is expanding the 8/401 interchange from 2-way (partial y interchange) to 3-way (T-interchange).

It is almost finished. There are still only three lanes heading into Kitchener, before the winter shutdown there was still some work ongoing on some outside barrier walls near the Grand River Bridge. Next summer the entire stretch will need to be top-coarsed with final asphalt.
