Not traditionally... Kelwona's DT used to be pretty underwhelming and the lakeshore was dotted with warehouses and run down old houses. It's changed a lot now.

I wonder if this signals the death of the Monaco - one of the reasons for rejecting the Monaco was the increase in density on the corner of St. Paul/Doyle. I can't imagine a large office tower across the street would increase its chances at going ahead.

Awesome news about the office building! Will definitely be the largest office complex in the waterfront downtown. How awesome would it have been if the Landmark Centre was all in the waterfront downtown too!?

^True dat. If Kelowna's past city councils had their shit together and put all the tall buildings close together like most cities, it would have a nice little skyline today.

Interior Health Authority just released the RFP for the facility in downtown Kelowna.

Info here: http://www.bcbid.gov.bc.ca/open.dll/...docTypeQual=TN

Click on "Supplier Attachments Exists" for RFP PDF.

Anyone can venture a guess on what at least 14,000 m2 would translate to in terms of height? Land around 4715 m2 - so around 6 storeys?

^^ The link says "expired" now...

I think office towers downtown is a good thing. Get people living AND working downtown. And not just working at the bank, bar, or small shops. Let's get some big wigs downtown too! and I don't think it's a waste of lake views to put towers downtown... Plenty of views to go around. Not to mention that in order to have an attractive skyline, we need a mix of res and office.

I love the comment about if all of Kelowna's highrises were downtown we'd have a nice little skyline. I've thought about that many many times. We have about 20 decent sized highrises around the city... Just imagining those all clustered together makes me smile.

Kamloops is a much better and nicer city. Kelowna is full of young d-bags living off of their parents wealth.

It may have nicer people. But Kelowna's skyline and towers are much nicer than Kamloops'

it would appear a four storey office building will be build on Lawrence behind the fire station, and that a demolition permit for the exiting building (Downtown Tan) has been applied for...

What are you like 12 years old? I've experienced the same amount of d-bags and good people in both towns. Kelowna has lots of uncool people during the Center of Gravity festival that come from Alberta and such but for the most part, lots of normal nice people in Kelowna.

As far as activities, scenery, buildings, water, beaches, etc are concerned, Kelowna wins hands down. All of my Kamloops friends even admit that Kelowna is much nicer.

Skyscrapers do not define a city the most; people do.

No, I'm in my 30s. And sorry to day, the amount of rich snotty d-bags in Kelowna goes unmatched anywhere that I have been to. It's a nice city, but the people are a whole different can of worms, and make the city very unappealing IMO. I'm hearing many people refer to Kelowna as D-bag central, and I would tend to agree.

Hmm. I moved here from Edmonton in 2009. I haven't come across any of these rich snotty d-bags you are talking about. Where are you hanging out? Like at Sapphire night club? The d-bags I come across usually have Alberta license plates and are acting out of control during a long weekend.

Clubbing in Kelowna gives that kind of impression. Last time I was partying there with my cousin from Calgary, he referred to it as the 'D-bag capital of Canada'. The bar scene felt like a bunch of roided up monkeys and bleach blond skanks.

Course that's only one face of the city, and I certainly don't feel it represents it as a whole. I lived in Kamloops for many years, and it has a more layed back rural atmosphere, whereas Kelowna is more urban for obvious reasons (density, size, etc.). Both cities have their merits, and the better one depends on a person's choice of lifestyle.

Or their desire to be surrounded by roid monkeys and fake titty blonde chicks.

Interesting that the lot at the corner of Ellis/Lawrence (former site of Henderson's dry cleaners, currently a parking lot) has sold after several years on the market. It is probably the most prominent underused lot downtown.

but there`s also a lot of good people like me who make an annual pilgramige to Kelowna every summer and love it there and like the people...i have never had any problems at all with the people. and please don`t say that all the d-bags come from Alberta because it`s unfair and not true!

No idea.

The Lucaya site was purchased by Jingon International Development, which is the same developer which has proposed the huge "Vancouver International Plaza" development in Richmond.
