The W is really looking great! Is there a contingent of Austin scenesters and/or hotel patrons that are drawn to modern hotel design that this property will help to serve?

Considering this property will have the ACL studios in the base of the tower and high level restaurant/possible retail. I'm sure this property will sell fast especially when the general public knows of this destination downtown. They see it but they won't know it until that street front television is blasting an ACL concert to all in hearing and seeing distance! Second street will rock in the near future

The W is looking amazing and fast becoming my favorite piece of downtown eye-candy. From my single experience staying W in Montreal, it was nice but strange - it looked like an upscale night club. In the middle of the business day, the lobby lights were low, and with a blue hue, it took a minute for my eyes to fully adjust in order to approach the concierge desk. I suppose there is a scene that likes the W's vibe. I just didn't feel cool enough to really enjoy it.

If luck comes through, then snow will be on the tops of our Austin skyscrapers. If it is, can someone take a picture of the Austin Skyline of Snow?

The bluish glass on the W is amazing. It to me is better than the medium white of the earlier renderings (If there was a new one that came out that I'm not aware of).

This is just spectacular. You've got the waterfront skyline on the right. The Austonian, 360, and W combo is just amazing. The W looks to be as tall as the roof of the 360. (Maybe higher).
Moving to the left, there's a little empty space around 301 Congress. If we could put a 400 footer or a 300 footer around there, that would be nice.
Around 6th Street, we have a mass of skyscrapers that include Frost, One American Center, and the Bank of America.
Left of that, there's Midtown. A bunch of 200 footers dot the area. The most prominent there are 816 Congress, Capitol Tower, and the Omni building.

Go Austin

snowfall amounts were around a half inch in downtown to 2 inches in the northwest side of town. That is around canyon vista school. Northward around 3 inches fell north of georgetown and 5 inches in the belton area. This is due to accumulations occuring only durring the heaviest snow periods. Cold air is brought down from aloft durring heavy snow in systems like these. Areas to the north had the longest prolonged period of this. What a wierd winter. Here in lexington we have had the leftover scraps of all the big storms around us. 3 inches here and 5 there and a few 1 inchers for good measure. Areas in all directions around us have had 8 or more inches at one time this year. However my daughter played in 3 foot snow drifts last week here. She lives in Austin and had never seen snow on the ground like that. She flew back monday and brought the snow back with her.

Do any of you remember the winter of 1985 in Austin? Right after New Years, we were hit with one snow blast after another. One of those storms dropped 6 inches in Austin, while San Antonio was buried under a foot. Talk about paralyzing the region!

Sorry it's a bit small, but here's one of my favorite pictures of the 1985 winter storm from the Statesman:

I was only 5 years old, but yeah, I remember it. I remember playing in it. There's a picture somewhere of me playing in it, and my little brother all bundled up too sitting on a chair. He was only about 14 months old then.

I was at work yesterday while it snowed so I really didn't have much time for taking snow pics. So I just took some around the office.

Nice pics. I love it how snow brings out the kid in people.

KXAN had some video yesterday of some kids at either a middle school or high school who were apparently cutting class to enjoy the snow. They were outside on the campus. They said a AISD campus police pulled up, and the reporters figured the officer would be going after the kids for cutting class. So the guy gets out and let's out the canine to play in the snow, and the kids even came over to see the dog.

Then there was that guy who moved here from Colorado who got out his skis and went skiing at the Capitol grounds. lol

Thanks for the snow mother nature! Well the only other time in my life snow came up more than an inch was back in 03'. That was cool. This time around was awesome!

Going along with zx14's report of "2 inches in northwest of town," that means we tie for 10th place in Austin's Top 10 Snowfalls!.

Austin's Top 10 Snowfalls!

1) 9.7" on November 11, 1937
2) 6.5" on January 30, 1949
3) 6.0" on February 22, 1966
4) 5.5" on December 21-22, 1929
5) 4.0" on February 21, 1964
6) 3.9" on January 2, 1985
6*) 3.9" on January 13, 1944
8) 3.1" on January 14, 1944
9) 3.0" on January 12, 1985
10) 2.0" on January 13, 1982
10*) 2.0" on February 6, 1967
10*) 2.0" on March 3, 1965
10*) 2.0" on February 23, 2010

http://www.kvue.com/community/blogs/marks-weather-blog/AustinTop10Snowfalls-69726367.html

Notice that the rate of top 10 snowfalls has decreased since 1985. Before that, snowfall totals regularly took the top 10. Nowadays, only 1 out of the many snowfalls in 25 years has taken the top 10. Don't worry. Austin is not the bottom of the pit in highest snowfall totals. The entire state of Florida has never seen a snow event of 7+ inches.

This Snowfalls Had Many Firsts in my Life:

1) The first snowball I ever made
2) The first snowball I ever threw
3) The first event in which I actually saw snow falling
4) The first time I ever hit someone with a snowball
5) The first time I was targeted with a snowball

Thanks for the data! Question...you mentioned this was the first one where you actually saw the snow falling. What about the ones in December 2008, February 2004 (a pretty good one), and February 1996 (another good one...I have that one on an old c-tape; in fact, it was better than yesterday's in north central Austin).

Dan Denson, well, 2008's shot of snow I didn't see: It didn't get back here in Oak Hill. 2004's blast: Well, I can't really remember. I was young at the time. But it wasn't falling by the time I went outside. It was actually sunny by then.

1996? I wasn't born yet.

We had a good dusting of snow in Midtown Austin yesterday. Some of the biggest flakes I have seen in years.

killeen got about 6/7 inches. amazing how the "snow line" was very defined. some areas above and below the line got hardly anything. for example dallas didn't get much at all, despite being further north. but they got their 12" a couple of weeks ago anyways. and i think san marcos didn't get natta. sure would be nice if we could have a few days of this every year.

I know the snow didn't show up on this animation, all the red/yellow/green stuff you see is not rain, but rather snow intensity.

Notice the snow in Austin from 8:00AM to 11:00AM.
