Technically however LeftCoaster's response is not too far off from the plan B. My bigger question is where they are going to recharge their water reserves.

...When Vancouver needed a leader to confront the housing issue head-on, roll up his or her sleeves and use every tool in the kit to solve the crisis, we got a mayor who instead played the blame game with the province. The single biggest tool in the city’s tool box, land use and permitting what would determine whether housing is scarce or abundant, was barely touched in any meaningful way.

The new government must not be afraid to make sweeping reforms to the city’s land use policies. When purpose-built rental buildings are banned on more than 70 per cent of residential land and are desperately needed in the face of a vacancy rate under one per cent, it is little wonder rents are skyrocketing and unscrupulous landlords capitalizing on the situation. Sadly Vision has done little to end the apartment ban.

The one promising development to come out of City Hall has been the initiative advanced by the city’s newest councillor, Hector Bremner, to take on Vancouver’s most atrocious zoning by changing West Point Grey’s mandatory mansions’ zoning in favour of allowing six-storey rental buildings in the area directly adjacent to UBC. (Bremner is seeking the NPA nomination to run for mayor in October’s municipal election.)...

Thanks for the post, interesting stuff. I have to admit I'm a bit surprised at the income levels in Dunbar and Shaughnessy. I was told they were mostly "students" and "stay at home moms" who made under $10k/year.

Yes, it does cost $740 to fly round-trip on new Vancouver-Seattle seaplane

Harbour Air launched its new service this week, but some question price

Tamara Baluja · CBC News · Posted: Apr 29, 2018

Harbour Air launched its long-awaited downtown Vancouver-to-Seattle seaplane service this week, but some are questioning if the price is a little sky high.

A one-way ticket purchased April 27 from Vancouver to Seattle for a May 4 flight was priced at $370.50, or $741 round-trip, coming back on May 7.

I flew to Japan then Singapore then back to Vancouver on ANA for cheaper than that last November.

That said this is a premium low capacity high yield service and I bet they do just fine. If someone wants to come in and undercut them with a larger more efficient plane there's nothing stopping them.

One-way on the HeliJet to Victoria is over $300, which is what business travellers and MLAs use.

Didn't know where to post this, but 100in1 Day urban interventions around the Metro Area are happening this Saturday and everyone that is interested in making public space better, more interactive and useful should check out 1 or a few of these events - many are downtown.

Anybody know what just happened at the library downtown? The little ABC Dollar store at the corner of Hamilton and Robson appears to have had it's whole front end destroyed.

I was just heading out a while ago and there is a huge police presence and the street is closed off and they were just taping off the area. At first I thought maybe a vehicle had driven into the front of the store but there is no vehicle around. I would think that if there was any lingering danger they would have evacuated the area so I don't think it was a bomb. Very curious. Maybe the helium tanks for the balloons blew up?

I'm heading out again and will check back later.

An SUV drove into the store. It was so deep into the store I didn't see it initially.

I was back and forth across town today and it was just the first of three major accident aftermath scenes that I came across. Welcome to summer!

Wow - hopefully no one was in the store.
The aisles in there are pretty narrow and you wouldn't be able to jump out of the way easily.

So just recently I started noticing neon coloured warning signs all over the lower mainland alerting people to the presence of gas lines beneath them. Are these really necessary? How did we survive for so long without them and then all of a sudden they're everywhere. They look ridiculous.

Candy-coloured umbrellas high above Yaletown park delight social media users

CBC News · Posted: Jun 02, 2018

The Yaletown BIA has installed a new public art work at Bill Curtis Square. (@vanclayton/Instagram)

It's been the driest May on record, but never mind that. A new Yaletown art installation that features colourful umbrellas hung above a public square has delighted Instagrammers.

The Yaletown Business Improvement Association (BIA) has hung an assortment of brightly-coloured umbrellas in the Bill Curtis Square, and are asking people to share their snaps with the hashtag #underbrella.
