Hey everyone, in case anyone noticed my absence, I haven't left, just went quiet for a while. I was in UAE for three weeks for work and was absolutely swamped once I returned. I've been lurking for the last week or so catching up on everything I missed.
I took a bunch of pictures while I was in Abu Dhabi/Dubai of some of their interesting architecture and design, which I'll post up when I get a chance.

St. John's celebrates its 125th birthday this weekend with various events around the city. VOCM's Katie Thompson has more details in this report.
The weekend-long event kicks off this Friday at noon as Mayor Dennis O'Keefe fires the inaugural cannon on Signal Hill. The Discovery Day Regatta follows the next morning at 8am where crews training for the Royal St. John's Regatta will compete. The Water Street Variety will take place downtown Saturday at noon with music by Mutrey and O'Brien and food samples from Bidgood's and Five Brother's Artisan Cheese. Saturday evening, Newfoundland Chocolate Company will guide a "history of chocolate tour" on Cape Spear. The Whale Festival will take place Sunday morning at 10 at Cape Spear with whale watching, exhibits and more. Finally, the Newfoundland Folk Arts Society will end the weekend with the St. John's Birthday Soiree at the Rocket Room downtown.
The Soiree will feature local folk music and admission is free.
After years of work, a second site in Newfoundland and Labrador has been granted UNESCO World Heritage Site status.
Labrador town of Red Bay gets World Heritage Site status

The United Nations body made the decision at a committee meeting in Cambodia this weekend.
"We've always known that Red Bay was unique and special,” the town’s mayor, Wanita Stone, told CBC News. “And now everybody in the world knows also — and also agrees with us."

Red Bay is being recognized for its Basque history — a history that was all but forgotten.
Long before commercial fishing, and the arrival of permanent settlers, boats from Spain and France filled Red Bay's harbour.
It was all part of Canada's first oil boom — an oil boom of a very different type. Basque whalers hunted their prey for their valuable oil.
