I wouldn't call this tower "boxy".





But zoning regulations have a lot to do with design in New York. The Tower Verre for example had to jump through hoops, not for its height, but special permits to achieve that design. Those permits were recently renewed. Zoning tends to shape building here, as it will with this one...

Transamerica pyramid was completed in 1972 and designed in the late 60's...

Go ahead while I admire the design of this tower.
The way this tower tapers up with several setbacks with a crowing spire is going to be compared more to Bank of America than to the nearby neighbor Chrysler Building.

I'll pitch in to the design conversation.

I personally don't like the design. It's not a terrible one, it's just boring. Just because it has angles and a few setbacks, it doesn't mean it's worthy of being in NYC. The examples NYGuy gave us of the firm's other work shows us that we're getting gimped here (assuming this is the near final design). I think I'm getting spolied by the other great looking buildings we're getting like Tower Verre and 111 W 57th St. Compared to those, this looks like unfinished work, a mere rough draft.

Most of this tower will be hidden when viewed from afar.
The setbacks will be noticed when admiring the skyline.

I wouldn't complain if the design improves though!

I don't think it's worthy, at least as far as the crown goes, for the location. It's one of the best locations for a skyscraper, and an important place on the city's skyline near the iconic Chrysler Building. In the renders we've seen up to now, it's very generic looking, the design still a work in progress. As we move further along the approval process, the tower will get more refined. The completed design will get more complete, detailed renderings. But so far, what we are seeing is very generic. The site demands something special. Still, its one of my favorite proposals at the moment, because it brings a new excitement to the Grand Central area, which has become stale over the years with new developments going up everywhere else in Manhattan.

I also agree of the strategic location on the skyline.
No matter where you are in the city, you will always know exactly where the Grand Central Terminal is just by looking at this tower.

I wonder which of these new towers, if any, along the Vanderbilt corridor or anywhere else in the area will be the first to incorporate a "Grand Central Place" or something into the name.

Anyway, it's a prime location, and one that will truly open to the public, with the observation space above giving us yet another new take on the skyline. I really can't wait,
but I know we are some years off. I'll take the new decks as they open, one at a time around Manhattan.
