Looks like lots of room to add lanes in some places and not so much in other. Is the plan to eventually have six lanes? Also, I'm still not seeing how this project is costing ~$2 billion. How many side projects are part of that total?

Not that I am aware is it to go to 6 lanes.

Also what most people neglect to think about when you see the $1.9B price tag is that they are servicing this road for 30 years and in the end have to give back in as new condition. That's means a significant overhaul of the bridges and redo of the roads service both main highway and service roads. So 1B for initial construction. $200M for serving / maint and $700M for refurbishing.

In Canada, we always joke about how every single highway project is politicized.

Took a couple of videos tonight before people really realize it's open.

This is the current beginning of the TGH extension, basically at the border of Mount Pearl and St. John's, to Kenmount, which is where it started until today.

Video Link

And this is the other direction, from Kenmount where it used to end on to Topsail Road. It'll be extended again in the future.

Will it eventually reach Pitts Memorial? It doesn’t seem sensible to end a freeway 1-2 km before another one.

Brookfield Road for sure - but I don't know after that.

Whole city is dead, really. There was almost no one anywhere I went tonight, and I had to drive across town to get to the TGH.

And go for it.

Yeah, that's the final phase of the highway. It'll run parallel to Brookfield Road, cut across and link into Pitts Memorial in some odd type of exchange.

It should intersect at the Commonwealth Ave interchange and continue south as routes 3, and 10 to the Southern Shore. I think the whole construction project will span over 15 years?

Norway Improving E39 (Cost: $47BN)

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=HCT-FurFVLQ

I know this is about Norway, but why can’t we have nice things like this too?

I think the situation in Norway is comparable to that in Canada in this video.

Canada has fjords to overcome with billion dollar highways?

I had BC HWY 1 in mind. The terrain’s almost similarly harsh but it’s in such crappy state now.

Oh shoot I forgot highways are provincially maintained in Canada so that’s why we don’t have nice things. I guess I answered my own question.

That's incredible, thanks for sharing - but look at the cost. I don't know how Norway can justify spending that much money for what looks like some pretty small villages, but they do have a trillion dollar wealth fund, unlike us. It would be like NL building a superhighway to all its fishing villages.

I agree thought, this sort of thing should be funded federally as it is the national highway. It is unfair to place all the burden on BC when they have by far the toughest section to build.

Norway taxes its residents and corporations at levels that are much, much higher than Canada does. If Canada wanted to tax its populace at similar levels we could build similar infrastructure as well.

That is absolutely spectacular, but I can tell you that overall, at the moment, Norway is quite a bit behind Canada in terms of highway infrastructure. (Even if the governance of our system is very wonky.)

And as another poster mentioned, we've also got an edge over Australia.

Lol such a comparison almost makes the US look like an anomaly among all the big countries in the Western Hemisphere. (I mean, surprisingly, the infrastructure in the Scandinavian countries isn’t that great.)

On another note, Western and Eastern Europe is a different story though. It’s crazy (and impressive) to see divided freeways through the Alps.

.
That part of Norway (the south-central west coast) actually has about one quarter of the country's entire population. So that puts it into perspective.

Also, Norway has historically under-invested in inter-regional highways and roads on the west coast, and also on overland routes linking the west coast to the more populated eastern part of the country where Oslo is.

Yeah, there is no true global norm on this front. Some of the Asian countries also have been building pharaonic infrastructure projects too.

Overall, Canada is probably in the middle of the pack.
